Tip: Differential bearing failures are very common on
trucks with Cummins Diesel engines. I recommend a complete
rebearing job on these axles every 125,000 miles to prevent
catastrophic failures. This is especially important with the
Model 70. If cost is a major factor, you should at a minimum,
replace the differential bearings and shims. |

Many Dana Axle have the model number cast somewhere on the cast
iron differential housing. (Number is shown at near actual size)

Most late 1970's and later Dana Axles have a Build Tag (red
arrow) attached to the differential by two of the
differential cover bolts (yellow arrows).
Earlier axles had the build code stamped on the right axle
tube. These stamped numbers are very hard to find on most
axles.

Not all Dana axles have the model number cast on the housing. It
can be very difficult to tell a Dana 60 from a Dana 70 as they
have nearly identical cover with exactly the same bolt pattern..
One way to tell if you have a Dana 60 or Dana 70 is to measure
the cover flange height (yellow arrow). The Dana 60 flange
height is approximately 1" high. The Dana 70 flange
height is about 1¼" high.

WHAT MODEL REAR AXLE DO I HAVE IN MY DODGE?
Dodge used Dana rear axles on almost all
1960's and newer 3/4 and 1 Ton
4x4 trucks through the 2002 Model Year.
Dana Axles all have a Bill of Material Number that can be used
to determine not only the axle model, but also what components
the axle was originally built with. The BOM Number
is a 6 digit number that begins with a 6 plus a dash number
(ex: 605523-3) The BOM number may by stamped on the
right axle tube (older axles) or stamped on a tag affixed to the
differential cover. We often ask for this number to insure
we provide you with the exact parts you need for your truck.

1967-1988 From the mid 1960's
to 1988 most 3/4 ton trucks had a Dana 60 unless they
were Camper Special models which usually had a Dana 70
as did most 1 Ton 300 series trucks.
1989-1993 All 250 and 350 trucks of
this vintage with the Cummins Diesel had a Dana 70.
All 350 series trucks with dual rear wheels (DRW) also
had a Dana 70 regardless of the engine. For the
most part, 250 series trucks with gas engines had a Dana
60 unless they were heavy GVW models.
1994-2002 Dodge used the Dana 60 on
some light GVW gas trucks. Most small V8 2500
models and most Cummins powered 2500 series trucks
with automatic transmissions used a Dana 70. All
Cummins trucks with manual transmissions and all 3500
series trucks used the Dana 80. |
