Driveshaft Identification
Before ordering replacement parts, you should always verify that the parts being ordered will match the shaft in your truck. Besides the model year parts changes detailed below as the part style changes are not always exactly the same as the model year change. It is not really unusual to find some of these older Dodge 4x4s have been modified with different make/size front driveshafts. We have seen a few 1994-2001 trucks with replacement Saginaw CV shafts (last used by Dodge in 1993), larger size upgrade shafts especially in lifted, high horsepower trucks, and even some trucks with just single Cardan front shafts (no CV). While chances are your truck has all the factory parts, make sure before ordering!

CV Joint: For the 1994 to 2001 model year Ram 1500 4x4 trucks, Dodge used 1330 series Double Cardan Constant Velocity (CV) front driveshafts. These shafts have a half-round flange type Spicer style Double Cardan CV joint with 1-1/16" diameter u-joint cups at the transfer case end.  
Slip Yokes: Three different slip joints were used depending upon the production date. 1994 to 1998 trucks had a fine spline with a u-joint with internal c-clips. 1999 used a fine spline yoke with a special u-joint using external snap rings in the slip yoke and internal C-clips for the pinion yoke. 2000-2001 used a joint with external snap rings in the slip yoke. No snap ring was used at the pinion yoke as side thrust is controlled by tabs cast into the pinion yoke. Yoke style changes are not always exactly the same as the model year change so some overlap may be encountered in 1998-1999 and 1999-2000 model years.  
Slip Joints Splines: Two different slip joint splines protected by rubber boots were used depending upon the production date. 1994 to 1998 trucks plus most if not all 1999 models would have a 1-9/32" fine spline yoke and stub. A few 1999, almost all 2000, and all 2001 shafts were built with an 1-3/8" coarse spline slip joint. Yoke style changes are not always exactly the same as the model year change so some overlap may be encountered in 1998-1999 and 1999-2000 model years.  
Front U-Joints: For the 1994 to 2001 model years, Dodge used 3 different front universal joints to connect the driveshaft to the front axle. 1994-1998 used a Detrit Universal 7290 series front joint that has 4 internal C-Clips to secure the u-joint cups in place. 1999 was a transition year that used a unique slip yoke and front universal joint. The model year changes are not nessacrily absolute as the U.S. and Mexican factories had slighly different inventories and build schedules. For example: a late production 1999 may have the 2000 joint and an early 2000 might have the 1999 joint.

Slip Stubs
The original equipment Slip Stubs for 1994 to 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 front Double Cardan front CV shafts are no longer in production. If you need a slip stub for driveshaft, we have our special QU40843 16 spline stub that is a bit longer than any of the original stubs so you can just cut the tube to the right length without having to precisely machine through the old weld. QU40843 16 Spline Slip Stub fits the 2.5" x 0.095" wall thickness tubing used on 1994-2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Double Cardan front CV driveshafts. The length from end of spline to weld point is approximately 19/32" longer than the stubs used on most of the 1994 to 2001 Dodge original equipment front driveshafts. See Tech Note below. Dan the Gear Man Tech Note: If you have a 1994 to early 1999 truck with the fine spline slip joint, you will also need to purchase QU40771 Slip Yoke, QU40764 Universal Joint, and QU40132 Boot. For later 1999 to 2002 models with the 1-3/8" original 16 spline or 15 spline based on 16 spline stub you can reuse both the slip yoke and boot if they are in good condition.  
Slip Yokes
For the 1994-1998 model years, all factory front CV shafts use a 1-9/32" fine spline stub and yoke with a Detroit Universal 7290 u-joint. The slip Joint is shielded by QK3078 Boot. 1999 are goofy years, so goofy that my 1999 and 2000 Dodge Parts books do not even list the front driveshaft parts! You may find some real early 1999 trucks with the 7290 series slip yoke. However, Most 1999 Driveshafts still have the 29 based on 30 fine spline slip stub, but use a Spicer 1330 series slip yoke with a conversion joint that attaches to a 7290 series front pinion yoke. Late production 1999 shafts may have a coarse, 16 spline, 1330 series slip joint with the 1330 x 7290 conversion u-joint. Real early 2000 trucks may still use the conversion joint and/or fine spline slip yoke, but most, if not all will use a 16 spline 1330 slip yoke with a straight 1330 u-joint. Given the age of this era of Dodge trucks, it is not unusual to find non-standard components. A great many of these trucks have had the original slip joint replaced with 1-3/8" diameter 16 spline aftermarket parts.

Tools
Most CV and universal joint service is done using makeshift tools and hammer on the parts until something gives service methods. Driveshaft parts and universal joints are incredibly precise components that can be easily damaged by such slam-bang work. There is a better way to perform driveshaft service using application specific press tooling and approved service procedures. Yeah, I know the Manuals and Tools are expensive, but when you consider that a poorly installed front u-joint blowing out as you tool down the Interstate at 75 is going to cause an expensive and dangerous mess. I have witnessed several driveshaft failures in vehicles driving ahead of me during my travels and I can tell you a 3' long front driveshaft can do a heck of a lot of damage as it whips around jamming into the road, whacking the transmission, and smashing the floor!

QT4008 Medium Size U-Joint Separator Yoke is used with a QT1065 series C-frame Press and QT4016 Press Anvil to easily remove the 3 universal joints on 1994 to 2002 Dodge Ram Double-Cardan Constant Velocity front driveshafts and 4x4 front axle shafts. By placing the press force against the u-joint cross, the amount of pressure needed to break a cup free is halved and the chances of damaging the yokes is greatly reduced. Works on rusted in or tight fitting u-joints.
QT4010 1" Press Tip is used with a QT1065 series C-frame Press and QT4016 Press Anvil to easily install universal joints with 1-1/16" to 1-3/16" diameter cups on most common light truck driveshafts and 4x4 front axle shafts.
QT4014 1-1/16" Capacity U-Joint Press Anvil used with a QT1065 series C-frame Press and either QT4008 Meduim U-Joint Separator Yoke or QT4010 1" Press Tip to easily remove and install the two universal joints from all 1994-2002 Dodge Ram front driveshaft CV Joints and the external snap ring front universal joint on 1999 to 2002 Ram 2500 and Ram 3500. Will not work on the front u-joint on 1994 to 1998 trucks using internal c-clips.
