The Double-Cardan CV Joint is located at the transfer case of the shaft and a single Cardan universal joint is at the front (axle end). While the basic configuration of the shafts is the same for all years, some of components used will vary depending upon the year. Before ordering replacement parts for your Dodge truck CV Joint, you should always verify that the parts being ordered will match the shaft in your truck. Besides the model year parts changes detailed below as the part style changes are not always exactly the same as the model year change. It is not really unusual to find some of these older Dodge 4x4s have been modified with different make/size front driveshafts. We have seen a few 1994-2002 trucks with replacement Saginaw CV shafts (last used by Dodge in 1993), larger size upgrade shafts especially in lifted, high horsepower trucks, and even some trucks with just single Cardan front shafts (no CV). CV Joint: For the 1994 to 2002 model year Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 4x4 trucks, Dodge used 1330 series Double Cardan Constant Velocity (CV) front driveshafts. These shafts have a half-round flange type Spicer style Double Cardan CV joint with 1-1/16" diameter u-joint cups at the transfer case end. All the parts in the Double Cardan CV Joint are the same for all 1994 to 2002 model year Dodge Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 4x4 trucks. | |||

Slip Yokes: Three different slip joints were used depending upon the production date. 1994 to 1998 trucks had a fine spline with a u-joint with internal c-clips. Early 1999 used QU40701 fine spline yoke with a special u-joint using external snap rings in the slip yoke and internal C-clips for the pinion yoke. Later production 1999 CV Shafts used the same universal joint, but with QU40771 coarse spline yoke. 2000-2002 used QU40771 coarse spline yoke and a u-joint with external snap rings in the slip yoke. No snap ring was used at the pinion yoke as side thrust is controlled by tabs cast into the pinion yoke. Yoke style changes are not always exactly the same as the model year change so some overlap may be encountered in 1998-2000 model years. | |||

Slip Joints Splines: Two different slip joint splines protected by rubber boots were used depending upon the production date. 1994 to 1998 trucks plus some 1999 models would have a 1-9/32" fine spline yoke and stub. Many 1999, and all 2000-2002 shafts were built with an 1-3/8" coarse spline slip joint. Yoke style changes are not always exactly the same as the model year change so some overlap may be encountered in 1998-1999 model year trucks. | |||

Front U-Joints: For the 1994 to 2002 model years, Dodge used 3 different front universal joints to connect the driveshaft to the front axle. 1994-1998 used a Detroit Universal 7290 series front joint (TK40722, QU40775) that has 4 internal C-Clips to secure the u-joint cups in place. 1999 was a transition year that used a front universal joint with 2 external Snap Rings and 2 Internal C-Clips (TK40804, QU40764). 2000 to 2002 model year trucks have shafts with the same external snap ring u-joint used in the CV head (TK40721, QU40774). The model year changes are not necessarily absolute as the U.S. and Mexican factories had slightly different inventories and build schedules. For example: a late production 1998 may have the 1999 joint and an early 1999 might have the 1998 joint. | |||

Slip Yoke Boots have done more to extend driveshaft life than any other design change since the 1920's. Until the late 1980s, almost all Dodge front CV shafts used a greaseable slip joint with a seal. Wear and premature failure were commonplace keeping driveline shops like ours busy replacing slip stubs and yokes every few years. Then BAM! Dodge (and others) started using non-greaseable slip joints with boots and our driveshaft shop got so slow we sold our driveshaft lathe! If your Boot is bad, REPLACE it. Dan the Gear Man Tech Note 1: When installed in a vehicle with the weight on the tires, a Driveshaft should have the slip joint positioned at about the midpoint of it's normal travel. Most full size truck slip joints have a normal travel length of 2.75" to 3". The exact point of the slip joint at rest position will vary depending upon the vehicle loading and condition of the front springs. If a driveshaft is too long, you can damage the driveshaft or even break a transfer case. Too short of a driveshaft can cause increase spline wear or worse, allowing the slip joint to separate as the axle articulates up and down while driving. | |||

Dan the Gear Man Tech Note 2: The original equipment 1-1/16" cup size 1330 series Double Cardan CV Joint is limited to no more than an 18° angle. If you big Ram has a lift kit, replacing the original assembly with one of our brand new 1-3-16" cup size 1350 series CV shafts will allow you to run up to a 32° CV angle without binding, however be aware that u-joint angles exceeding 20° will result in increased component wear and significant energy loss due to the power required to rotate u-joints at high angles. Also, remember the u-joint angle at the front axle can not exceed 15°. | |||

If you need a slip stub for driveshaft, we have our special QU40843 16 spline stub that is a bit longer than any of the original stubs so you can just cut the tube to the right length without having to precisely machine through the old weld. Most CV and universal joint service is done using makeshift tools and hammering on the parts until something gives service methods. Driveshaft parts and universal joints are incredibly precise components that can be easily damaged by such slam-bang work. There is a better way to perform driveshaft service using application specific press tooling and approved service procedures. Yeah, I know the Manuals and Tools are expensive, but when you consider that a poorly installed front u-joint blowing out as you tool down the Interstate at 75 is going to cause an expensive and dangerous mess. I have witnessed several driveshaft failures in vehicles driving ahead of me during my travels and I can tell you a 3' long front driveshaft can do a heck of a lot of damage as it whips around jamming into the road, whacking the transmission, and smashing the floor! | Link to Vehicle Make or Category Links |

QT4008 Medium Size U-Joint Separator Yoke is used with a QT1065 series C-frame Press and QT4016 Press Anvil to easily remove the 3 universal joints on 1994 to 2002 Dodge Ram Double-Cardan Constant Velocity front driveshafts and 4x4 front axle shafts. By placing the press force against the u-joint cross, the amount of pressure needed to break a cup free is halved and the chances of damaging the yokes is greatly reduced. Greaseable or non-greaseable which is better? Which u-joint type is best for YOU will depend upon your budget, operating conditions, maintenance, engine power, and expected length of ownership. From a standpoint of durability under most operating conditions, our Torque King® cold-forged factory lubed universal joints will outlast greaseable universal joints by a considerable margin due the the hardness of the cold-forged cross and superiority of the multiple lip seals especially if your Cummins Diesel has enhanced horsepower. However, Torque King® u-joints are more expensive and require greater care in installation. Our greaseable u-joints are quality, USA made parts with hot-forged crosses and single lip seals. For stock engine trucks with good maintenance, greaseable u-joints will last for a long time....but, it has been our experience that most people do not grease their vehicles as frequently as they should and most do not use a quality synthetic like Pyroplex Plus. If you miss a lube interval during wet winter weather, water will probably infiltrate past the single lip seal and presto you have a rusty, failed u-joint! | Link to Vehicle Make or Category Links |
