The heavy-duty, Dana-Spicer, Model 60 248 Front Beam-Design Iron (FBI) axle was used on all 1998 and 1999 Ram 2500 3/4 ton and Ram 3500 1 Ton 4x4 trucks regardless of engine. 1998 marked the first year that Dodge did not offer any 3/4 ton truck with a Model 44 front axle since civilian type 3/4 ton 4x4s were introduced in 1957.

All the Dana 60 front axles used in 1998 and 1999 Dodge Ram 2500/3500 4x4's were factory equipped with a vacuum actuated Central Axle Disconnect (CAD) system. (continued below)

All 1994-1999 Dana Front Axles in Dodge Ram trucks had a Bill of Material Number (BOM) stamped on a Build Tag (red arrow) attached to the differential by two of the differential cover bolts (yellow arrows) when the vehicle was shipped from the factory. Unfortunately, these tags are often missing on trucks that had prior differential service. The BOM number is a 6 digit number beginning with a 6 plus a dash number (ex: 610604-2). They can be used to determine not only the axle model, but also what components the axle was originally built with. We often ask for this number to insure we provide you with the exact parts you need for your truck.

Each different BOM number signifies an engineering part change which may be minor or major and may involve one or more parts. The dash number indicates the axle ratio. For 1994-1999 Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks built for civilian use, 3.54 ratio is a -1, 4.10 ratio is -2.

Ball Joints for 1998-1999 Dodge Model 60
The Ball Joints used in your 1998-1999 Dodge Model 60 are not used in any other year or model of Dodge truck. Dan the Gear Man® Tech Note 1: There is insufficient clearance between the axle shaft and upper greaseable ball joints to leave in a grease fitting. After greasing, you need to remove the 90° fitting and replace it with a supplied threaded plug. The procedure is tedious but not difficult unless you are "all thumbs".

Dan The Gear Man® Tech Note 2: The good news is Ball Joint replacement on these trucks is pretty easy unless the front end of your Dodge has never been apart before. Getting rusted-in wheel hubs broke free from the knuckle on your 1998-1999 Ram can be a REAL WITCH! However, not near as bad as a 2000 or newer!

Brake Parts

Brake Splash Shields deflect road splash and grit from the brake rotors. Rust from road salts or corrosive soils is the most common cause for replacement. The shields can also be bent or torn from hitting rocks off road or from accident damage. Another cause of wrecked shields and also spacers is incorrect service procedures including driving a chisel between the hub and knuckle during disassembly.

QU40292 Output Shaft Support Bearing is located in your right axle tube, just to the left of the rectangular CAD opening. This genuine original equipment, press-fit bearing supports the splined end of the differential output (what Dodge calls the intermediate shaft). For all 1998 Dodge Ram 2500, and 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 trucks. This Bearing also fits on all 1998 Dodge Ram 3500, and 1999 Dodge Ram 3500 4x4 trucks.

QU40107 Plastic Axle Bushing is a very common part to wear out. This genuine, original equipment Plastic Bushing fits inside the inner end of your right inner axle shaft. Hub Assemblies
Unitized Front Wheel Bearing and Hub Assemblies for 1998, and 1999 Dodge Ram 4X4 trucks with the Dana-Spicer Model 60 front axle. This will include ALL 1998-1999 Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 4x4 trucks regardless of engine or vehicle weight rating. The front wheel bearings on 1998-1999 Dodge 4x4 3/4 and 1 ton 4x4 trucks are of unitized construction.  They are not serviceable and no individual replacement parts are available for them.  If your front wheel bearings are noisy or loose, you need to replace the hub and bearing assembly with one of these original equipment  hub assemblies featuring Timken® Bearings and those all important studs. For 1998-1999 Dodge Ram 2500 and Ram 3500, there are a total of six front 4x4 hub choices depending upon the type of Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS), and if your truck has Single Rear Wheels(SRW) or Dual Rear Wheels (DRW). For 1998 and 1999 model year Dodge Ram 2500 and Dodge Ram 3500 4x4 trucks, the ABS sensor and tone ring are internally mounted in the hub. Ring and Pinion Kits
  Unless your axle has run out of oil or it is severely abused, you will probably never have to replace your original ring and pinion set. However, if you do need one, we stock original equipment Dana-Spicer Gear Sets for your Ram's Model 60 front axle. These genuine gear sets are not cheap when compared to the host of knock off Asian import gear sets being pushed into the market place by vendors focused on getting the cheapest stuff they can. Well, like anything, you get what you pay for. I have been setting up Dana Gear Sets since the mid 1970's to date, and I have never had a setup problem with a genuine Dana-Spicer Gear Set. The same is not true for the aftermarket parts. Besides having sloppy machining, most aftermarket gears are not made to use the Dana factory set up tools, so a person usually has to apply some blood-boiling "Kentucky Windage" to the setup procedure to make progress.

The Dana 60 Front Axle was substantially redesigned for the 2000 model year. Despite the outward similarity of the new axles, relatively few parts are interchangeable between 1994-1999 era axles and 2000-2002 axles.

lunchtime in the Beartooths
Near the shores of Crow Lake in the Beartooth Mountains, Jet, the mountain horse, takes a lunch break after a hard morning of Elk hunting. The temperature is about 35° but the bright, noon sun makes it feel warmer. The horse side of saddle blanket is towards the sun allowing some of the sweat to dry. The hunter orange pack was made for dual use as a backpack or slung from the saddle horn. Between the gear in the pack and that still on the saddle, Jet and his human partner are set for up to 3 days in the mountains in reasonable comfort and can pack out all the meat from a boned out elk or 2 quarters without any extra gear or horses than what you see here.
