German owned ZF Industries supplied Ford with
the aluminum housing S5-42 5 speed manual transmission for
various F150 through F550 models from 1987 until early in 1995.
The primary weak spots in these transmission were with
lubrication and shifting (particularly in reverse). The
recommend oil is Mercon/Dexron, but for maximum bearing life it
is essential to use a synthetic Mercon/Dexron Automatic
Transmission Fluid for Diesel powered trucks or for hard
used gas trucks. The synchro clutch teeth on the gears are
small and short which when worn, will cause the transmission to
jump out of gear. Rated at only a modest 420 ft-lbs. of
torque, the S5-42 was inadequate for use behind turbocharged
diesel engines. The S5-42 was replaced starting in 1994 by
the similar, but short lived S5-47. Due to the advancing
age of these transmissions, we no longer stock many parts for
them, however, we can still supply both genuine ZF and
aftermarket parts as needed. |
