Tip: When removing the tie rod and drag link ends from the
steering knuckles, use the QT1200 Tie Rod Separator instead of a
"pickle fork" tie rod wedge. The QT1200 is the same type of tool
recommended by GM to safely separate the steering linkage from
the knuckle without damaging the seal, seat, or stud.

Service Tip:
The upper king pins themselves usually do not
need replacement. If yours are worn or rough, order the
QK4550 kit from our
Common Front Axle Parts Page which includes both upper king pins, a ¾" drive
impact socket/hex bit, and high strength Threadlocker. The
Dana recommended king pin torque is 600 ft-lbs.

Tip: If you are experiencing erratic steering and the
steering linkage is in good shape, check your axle-u-joints for
binding. Place the front axle on jack stands. Unlock the
steering column and turn the steering wheel all the way to
either direction. Lock the hubs in and rotate the tires. If an
axle u-joint is binding, the tires will not rotate freely
without moving the steering wheel. Also, inspect around the
u-joint seals. If you see a rusty looking powder on any seal,
that u-joint requires replacement. |

Inner Axle Shaft Seal Kits
Whenever you remove the front axle shafts, inspect the shafts and
axle tubes for any signs of differential fluid leakage. It's a
lot cheaper and easier to replace the seals than rebuilding your
diff after it blows up due to oil starvation! Differential
removal is required. These are tricky seals to install, but you
can do it with one of these kits! A differential case spreader
is definitely recommended but not absolutely required for differential
removal/installation on Dana/Spicer Model 44 and 60 axles. We also find a dead-blow sledge
essential to
reinstall the differential. Extra seals, differential cover
gaskets, and RTV sealant are available separately. Call us for
information on additional tools required to disassemble the
axle.
