Aftermarket kits are only
intended for use in NV4500 transmissions with serviceable
mainshafts. Inspect the 5th gear area of your original
mainshaft for wear. The un-splined area that supports the
5th gear should not be significantly grooved from the old gear.
The new 5th gear should be a
press fit. If you
can slide your new 5th gear on the original mainshaft, you
should not install this kit as premature failure may occur!
If this is the case with your transmission, you will also need
to replace at least the mainshaft and 5th gear.

If you
had the mainshaft nut back off on your NV4500 and the mainshaft is still good, you can replace the mainshaft 5th gear without removing the transmission with one of
