The constant mesh, wide range, fully synchronized, NV5600 Six Speed Overdrive Manual Transmission is factory rated for 540 lb.-ft. of torque. It has an integral aluminum clutch housing. The front bearing retainer, main case and tailshaft housing are cast-iron. Gear ratios are: First 5.63:1, Second 3.38:1, Third 2.04:1, Fourth 1.39:1, Fifth 1:1 (direct), Sixth 0.73:1 (overdrive), and Reverse 5.63:1.

The NV5600, which was produced at New Venture Gear's Muncie, Indiana plant was an option on 1999-2005-1/2 Dodge Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 trucks with either the Cummins Diesel or V10 gas engine. The early NV5600, which is found (continued below).

Accelerated bearing wear or major bearing failures on NV5600 transmissions are usually caused by lubrication related issues. Low oil levels are real bearing killers, as is contaminated or incorrect oil. The heavy and complex NV5600 is not a cheap or super easy transmission to rebuild. To maximize bearing life install a QK1000 Filter plus Check and change your oil regularly.
TK12006 Torque King® Complete NV5600 Premium Bearing and Seal Kits for NV5600 transmissions feature the original equipment quality tapered roller bearings and needle bearings as specified by New Venture/MTM. The tapered roller bearings are Timken except for the pilot bearing which may be Timken or Koyo. Needle bearings are mostly supplied by Torrington.

Bearings, Ball and Needle Roller
NV5600 Transmissions use caged needle bearings to support rotating gears. The bearing caged may be either plastic or metal. There are also 3 replaceable inner races. The ball bearing supports the end of the mainshaft. It is secured to the shaft by QU10850 mainshaft nut. Country of origin on the bearings will vary from lot to lot. Most are U.S.A. made, but some come from overseas with Germany and Japan being the most common offshore sources.

Blown 5600 BearingClick to enlarge Dan The Gear Man® Tech Note: Guys, Click on the photo to see what happens if you let your NV5600 transmission lube level get low or old. This can also occur if the Mainshaft end-play is set incorrectly. This Mainshaft Center Bearing was taken from a 2005 Ram 3500 ranch truck with about 80,000 miles on the odometer. As we say in Montana: "that outfit was rode hard and put away wet". The transmission oil level was never checked from Day 1.

Dan the Gear Man® Tech Note: Too much power + Quick Release = Broken 4th Gear Clutch Ring! The welded-to-the-gear Clutch Ring has cracked at the drive slots and failed. Although the transmission would jump out of 4th, the truck was driven in this condition.
Input Shafts
The input shafts we carry have 26 gear teeth, 54 synchro clutch teeth, and are made to fit the 2001 to 2005 bronze coated synchro rings. QU12001 will fit any NV5600 Transmission, but you will need to upgrade the matching synchro ring to a QU10408 if you are installing one in a 1999 or 2000 transmission with the original fiber-coated synchro rings. Dan the Gear Man® Tech Tip: Nose wear from the Clutch Pilot Bearing is the most common reason to replace your input shaft. Although the Pilot Bearing is in the flywheel, it is also keeping the front of the input shaft centered to the crank shaft. A bad Pilot Bearing will chew up the Input Nose or Tip and may lead to transmission gear tooth breakage.
Mainshafts and Mainshaft Parts
The New Venture NV5600 6 speed was only made with two Mainshaft (rear output shaft) types. Dodge 4x4 29 Spline and Dodge 4x2 31 Spline. While the shafts themselves are very different than those used with Dodge NV4500 5 speed transmissions, the output splines are exactly the same 29 spline (4x4) and 31 spline(4x2) as used with NV4500HD powered by the Cummins or V10 engines. QU12047 Mainshaft 1st Gear for 2001.5-2005 NV5600 Transmissions This 39 tooth gear rarely needs to be replaced due to breakage, but if you run your transmission low on oil or with dirty oil, chances are good the gear bore and thrust face will be damaged. QU12013 Mainshaft 6th Gear for 2001.5-2005 NV5600 Transmissions has 24 teeth. 6th Gear has a final drive ratio of 0.73:1. With the narrow rpm band of the Cummins Diesel engine, the 27% overdrive provided by this gear is essential for reaching highway speeds especially with 4.10 rear axle gears. If your engine speed is 2400 rpm at 65 mph in 5th (direct drive), shifting to 6th will cut the engine speed to 1752 rpm. Imported. Shift Forks and Shifting Parts
NV5600 Transmissions used two similar Shift Tower Types. The Tower Base and lower stem are identical so either Tower will fit any NV5600 Transmission. The difference is in the design of the upper threaded stub. 1999-2002 Towers have a double bend threaded stub. Third Generation 2003-2005 Ram trucks with NV5600 transmissions will have a slightly shorter, single bend stub.

Countershaft end-play is adjusted by selective fit shims and QU10412 Bearing Spacer located between the input bearing cup and front bearing retainer. The end-play adjustment for the countershaft reverse gear is set by selective fit shims positioned between the countershaft rear bearing cup and the cast iron rear transmission housing. Accurate end-play adjustments will maximize bearing life.
Small Parts
Dan the Gear Man® Product Note: We stock most of the small parts you may need to keep your NV5600 going. Some of these parts are still readily available at reasonable cost. Some however, have all but vanished from the earth. For those all but gone pieces, we had to compete against every transmission warehouse and rebuilder in the country to grab what was available. Surprising nobody, those parts are going to cost dearly if you need one, but at least you can get that critical little part holding you up from getting your NV5600 back together. As the available inventory is so small on a few of these parts, we are limiting the quantities you can buy at one time on several items.

NV5600 Pressure Piece Kit QU50283 Synchronizer Pressure Piece Set One Kit is required for each synchronizer. Installing these little devils in the synchronizers can be tricky and a slip often means the ball and or spring flies across the shop! Dan the Gear Man® Tech Note: 1999-2000, plus some early 2001 NV5600 transmissions used a unique synchronizer ring that was discontinued long before New Venture went belly up. To the best of my knowledge, no one currently makes rings for those early transmissions. What you need to do is replace the matching gear with a late model gear and purchase a late model ring for that gear. For instance, if your 5th and 6th synchros are out, you need to get a new style QU12001 Main Drive Gear (Input Shaft), QU12013 Mainshaft 6th gear, and 2 QU10408 Synchro Rings.

Thrust Washers
Thrust Washers reduce wear between rotating parts. Usually, there is little visible wear on Thrust Washers from a well-maintained transmission, however, galling and heat discoloration/damage is often evident on Thrust Washers that are from transmissions run with low or incorrect lube. Country of origin on our Thrust Washer inventory is not known, most if not all are likely U.S. made, but New Venture did not specify origin on most small parts.

(continued from above)... on 1999 and 2000 trucks had a 1-1/4" input shaft and fiber-lined synchronizer rings. The input shaft was beefed up to 1-3/8" for the 2001 model year after one of the 1-1/4" shafts failed behind a Cummins High Output engine during a long-term Chyrsler engineering road test. Also for 2001, the synchronizer rings and gears were redesigned. Except for the shift tower stub length change for the all new 2003 body style, very little significant engineering changes were made between 2001 and the end of production in January of 2005.

Although the NV5600 and NV4500HD have a similar overall gear ratio range and they were produced concurrently by New Venture for use in Dodge Diesel and V10 trucks, the two transmissions share almost no design similarities or interchangeable parts. (Dan the Gear Man Note: From the way the NV5600 is designed, I am pretty certain it was a German Getrag design built under license by New Venture just like the the little NV3500 was the New Venture version of the Getrag HM290)

After NV5600 production ceased in January of 2005, MTM (The GM division that operated the Muncie Transmission plant after Chyrsler and GM dissolved New Venture) pretty much stopped making parts for them. By December of 2005, most new parts were no longer available from any source. Since that time, the parts situation has improved considerably for the 2001 and later transmissions. Regrettably, most year specific parts for the 1999 and 2000 transmissions are history. However, it is possible (but expensive) to retrofit the early transmissions with the later synchro rings and gears.

The reliability and durability of the NV5600 is generally good, especially in higher horsepower towing applications that would grossly overload a NV4500 5 speed (anything over 600 lb-ft of torque at the flywheel). Accurate shaft end-play readings are critical, as is keeping a full fill of the correct oil in the gearbox. A NV5600 run short of oil or with the incorrect oil is likely to suffer a mainshaft bearing failure. Many owners overfill the NV5600 with no more than one extra quart of oil to help guard against lubrication related bearing failures. The NV5600 is generally not an easy shifting transmission due to the convoluted shift mechanism and the use of brass coated synchronizer rings staring in 2001 model year. On 2001 and newer transmissions, using the brass coated synchro rings, it is imperative to run a filter to cleanse the oil of brass particles worn from the rings.

Rebuilding a NV5600 can be challenging for the do-it-yourself mechanic due to the weight of the transmission, the in-line case design, and the multiple shift rails. The actual disassembly and reassembly of the shafts and gears is pretty straight-forward. Where the casual mechanic gets caught is assembling the gear-train into the case. A support to hold the assembled shafts in place is required as is a lifting fixture that will keep them together as they are lifted from the support and then lowered in the front case.

Yellowstone Griz
In nearby Yellowstone Park, a Grizzly Bear stops traffic as it crosses a road. The big bears are pretty common in mountainous areas outside the Park, even if rarely seen by the casual back country traveler. The knowledge that they are there gives a certain spice to the journey especially if overnight camping is on the agenda. The long claws visible on this bear are a great tool for flipping over rocks to get at insects or digging for shallow dwelling burrowing rodents.
