All 1994-2002 Dana Rear Axles in Dodge Ram trucks have a Bill of Material Number (BOM) stamped on a Build Tag (red arrow) attached to the differential by two of the differential cover bolts (yellow arrows). The BOM number is a 6 digit number beginning with a 6 plus a dash number (ex: 605523-3). They can be used to determine not only the axle model, but also what components the axle was originally built with. We often ask for this number to insure we provide you with the exact parts you need for your truck.
Each different BOM number signifies an engineering part change which may be minor or major and may involve one or more parts. The dash number indicates the axle ratio and differential type (open or locking). Unfortunately, these tags are often missing on trucks that had prior differential service.
Many Dana Axle have the model number cast somewhere on the cast iron differential housing. (Number is shown at near actual size.)

1994-2002 Dodge Ram 2500 with a gas V8 engine used the Dana 60 on light GVW trucks.

Not all Dana axles have the model number cast on the housing. It can be very difficult to tell a Dana 60 from a Dana 70, as they have nearly identical covers with exactly the same bolt pattern. One way to tell if you have a Dana 60 or Dana 70 is to measure the cover flange height (yellow arrow). The Dana 60 flange height is approximately 1" high. The Dana 70 flange height is about 1¼" high.
There is only one axle shaft shaft choice for 1994-2002 Dodge Ram 2500 Dana 60 Rear Axles. Left and right axle shafts are the same length regardless of year or if it is a 4x2 or 4x4 truck.
TK40587 Torque King® 30 SPLINE REAR AXLE SHAFT for Dodge Ram 2500 DANA 60 Rear Axles Are extra strong, fully hardened, USA made, high performance alloy steel axle shafts for Dana 60 full-floating rear axles in 1994 to 2002 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 or 4x2 trucks with gasoline V-8 engines.
All 1994-2002 Dodge Ram 2500 trucks are equipped with Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS). Rear Drum Brakes with cable controlled parking brakes were used on all models until mid model year 2001 when rear disc service brakes/drum parking brakes were introduced. 13" x 2-1/2" rear drum brakes equipped 1994-1999 Ram 2500 trucks. For 2000 and 2001, models, the drum brake size is 12-1/8" x 3-1/2".
Axle Vent/Brake Block Bolts are hollow, so it is very easy to twist them off due to rust or over-tightening.
If you only need a bearing or two for your 1994-2002 Dodge Dana rear axle, we stock the best: Timken®. For the amount of work it takes to change most axle bearings, the extra cost for a Timken® diff or pinion bearing is a small price to pay for better steel, more uniform surface finish, and accurate, precision ground races.
Gear set breakage caused by worn and loose Differential Bearings is one of the biggest killers of rear axles. When the differential bearings wear, the backlash between the ring gear and pinion gear will change. Most often, it increases as the ring gear side differential bearing usually takes the brunt of the wear. As the backlash increases beyond approximately 0.010", the chances of breaking a gear tooth increase dramatically. Additionally, a rough and worn differential bearing is very likely to break free and spin on the differential case which will usually mean the case must be replaced. With the Model 60, one often finds the differential bearing cups have worn sideways into the axle housing. Sometimes, the wear is minor and can be compensated for by re-shimming the differential, but in most cases, the axle bore faces will need to be re-cut with an Axle Bore Facing Tool such as the QT1000 or the axle housing will need to be replaced. To minimize the chances of wrecking expensive differential parts, I recommend completely you re-bearing your Dana 60 rear axle every 125,000 miles.
During the 1994 to 2002 model years, Dodge Ram 2500 trucks using Dana 60 rear axles were available with an optional Dana Trac-Lok™ clutch-type Limited Slip differential. Clutch type differentials wear out under normal use and they will usually need the clutch sets replaced at 100, 000 to 125, 000 miles to maintain adequate limited slip function.
The 30 spline Dodge Dana 60 Open Differential is adequate for stock or near stock engine horsepower. As power increases, the chances of gear breakage increase substantially. If you are planning an axle ratio change, you need to keep in mind the ring gear offsets are different for 4.10 and numerically lower ratios and 4.56 and numerically higher ratios. So if you are changing from a 4.10 to 4.56 or vice-versa, you MUST change the diff case! The internal parts are the same, but the ring gear flange on the diff case (carrier) is closer to the pinion on the 4.56-up cases.

Dana 60 Rear Axles in 1994-2002 Dodge Ram 2500 Trucks did not have factory differential cover gaskets. The Diff Cover was sealed with RTV sealant. The only factory gaskets were steel gaskets between the wheel hub and axle shaft flange. You can use a diff cover gasket when servicing your truck, but you should never replace the steel axle shaft gaskets with either RTV or paper gaskets.
Knowing how to do the job right the first time is half the battle. With our detailed, easy to read, and well illustrated technical publications, you get accurate service procedures, torque specifications, and tool recommendations.
Proper lubrication and replacing damaged or worn small parts is often the difference between a first class, long-term repair and a short lived nightmare. In this section are the small parts, chemicals, and accessory items that do not neatly fit under our other parts headings.
From 1994 through 1999 all Dodge Ram Dana 60 rear axles used the same one-piece pinion seal. 2000-2002 axles all have two-piece pinion seals consisting of an inner oil seal and an outer wiper seal. The outer wiper V-Seal is the same for all 2000-2002 axles, but two different, non-interchangeable inner oil seals were used so if you have a 2000-2002 truck, you will need to verify which seal your truck needs before ordering.
Dodge used two different, non interchangeable Pinion Yokes for 1994-2002 Dana 60 Rear Axles. Both take the same size u-joint, but use different seals. We stock both individual Yokes and Yoke Kits with seals and hardware.
When it comes to fit, finish, durability, and ease of set-up, no aftermarket gear set equals the matched, original equipment Dana-Spicer Ring and Pinion Sets. I have been building axles for well over 30 years, and to date, I have never had a problem setting up a genuine Dana-Spicer gear set or have we had to set up a gear set warranty. That is a track record that the aftermarket gear suppliers can only dream about. The bottom line is when you purchase a genuine Dana-Spicer gear set, you get quality equal to original equipment because it Is original equipment. When you select an aftermarket import gear set you will not get a gear set that installs and performs equal to original equipment.

Sometimes, you just need one or two small parts to get back on the road. Between the small parts listed in this section and many others listed under part specific headings elsewhere on the page, we probably have that pesky little part you have to have but just can't find anywhere else.
Spindle Nuts have two functions and they are to provide for correct wheel bearing adjustment and to keep your wheel hubs in place. We stock both the original equipment single nut and our Torque King® double spindle nut upgrade sets for your Dodge Dana 60 rear axle. Stock Spindle Nuts and Spindle Lock Wedges are "Single Use" parts that are designed to be installed once and only once. For safety reasons, you must discard both the nut and wedge if they are removed from the spindle for any reason. Both parts lose a percentage of their resistance to coming off when they are removed. You may hear of cases where this type of factory nut has come off while the truck was being driven. Invariably, these failures involve nuts and wedges that have been reused or improperly installed.

Type 2 Seals were only original equipment on some 1996-1999 axles. 3500 series Vans with 2-1/4" ID inner bearings use the same seals as the Ram trucks. B3500 Vans with identical 2" ID inner/outer wheel bearings use a different seal.
