For a given year/wheel base/engine/transmission/transfer case/rear axle combination, complete shaft assemblies will be interchangeable. Since there are so many possible wheel base and powertrain combinations, it is usually quite difficult to find a good used driveshaft that exactly matches yours. For that reason, we stock the individual components that are currently available including weld yokes and tubing so you can repair a damaged shaft and keep your Dodge on the road.
The most common Dodge Ram rear driveshaft problem is vibration or clunking from worn out u-joints. If your truck is lifted, you may have vibration problems due to the increased driveshaft angles. For trucks with 2 piece rear driveshafts, you may need to lower the center bearing to equalize the u-joint angles.
For 1994 to 2002 Dodge Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 trucks with Dana full float rear axles (this will include all Cummins Diesel and V10 trucks and all but the lightest duty Ram 2500 models with smaller gas engines), Dodge standardized on a an 4-3/16" wide external snap ring u-joint with 1-3/16" diameter cups. For normal service parts, all you really need to know is if your driveline is a single shaft part with 2 universal joints or 2 shaft assembly with 3 universal joints and a Center Bearing.
The descriptive term "Cardan" refers to a conventional cross type universal joint. A Single-Cardan joint has one universal joint for each yoke. 1994-2002 Dodge Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 trucks with Dana full float rear axles* and 2 piece rear driveshafts have a slip joint protected by a rubber boot just aft of the Center Bearing. A boot protected driveshaft slip joint will usually outlast the truck as as long as the boot is intact and there is some grease on the splines. If your Boot is damaged, REPLACE IT! If your Boot is OK, but you are doing other driveshaft service, always clean and grease the splines AND replace the clamps!

For the 1994 to 2002 model years, only Dodge Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 trucks with center bearing supported 2 part rear driveshafts will use a Slip Stub. These Midship Splined Slip Stubs are used with QU40128 Boot Kit, QK3064 Center Bearing, and QU40844 Slip Yoke. 3", 3.5", and 4" diameter rear driveshafts were used depending upon the year, truck model, engine, and transmission. The Slip Stub for the 4" diameter shafts is no longer available.

Driveshaft attachment hardware is one of the most overlooked components requiring frequent replacement. Dodge used bolts with factory pre-applied Threadlocker on the bolt threads. While you can reuse these bolts if you use liquid Threadlocker, you can not compensate for either head wear or bolt fatigue. Replacing your driveshaft attachment hardware when performing other driveshaft service is good preventative maintenance
Most driveshaft and universal joint service is done using makeshift tools and hammer on the parts until something gives service methods. Driveshaft parts and universal joints are incredibly precise components that can be easily damaged by such slam-bang work. There is a better way to perform driveshaft service using application specific press tooling and approved service procedures. Yeah, I know the Manuals and Tools are expensive, but not when you consider the expensive and dangerous mess you will be in if a poorly installed u-joint blows out as you tool down the Interstate at 75 mph! I have witnessed several driveshaft failures in vehicles driving ahead of me during my travels and I can tell you a 5' long rear driveshaft can do a heck of a lot of damage as it whips around!
Dodge used 3", 3.5", and 4" outside diameter alloy driveshaft tubing with welded seams for 1994 Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 rear driveshafts depending upon the year, engine, transmission, and wheelbase. Driveshaft tubing is typically more concentric, straighter, and has a higher Rockwell hardness rating when compared to general purpose tubing. A driveshaft needs to be retubed any time the tube is bent, dinged, or creased. Retubing a driveshaft is best done by a qualified driveline shop that can balance the finished assembly, however any competent machinist with a long bed lathe can successfully retube a driveshaft.
