Rear Driveshaft Parts for 1961 to 1993 Full Size Dodge Ram 4x4s with Gasoline Engines

We stock a selection of the most common rear driveshaft service parts needed to keep your vintage gasoline engine Ramcharger, Trailduster, or full size Dodge pickup going. Except for some 1989-1993 heavy-duty models, almost all the gas powered Dodge trucks used rear driveshafts manufactured by Chrysler's Detroit Universal division.

Dodge used at least 4 different universal joints for gas engine civilian light truck rear driveshafts of the 1961-1993 era. By far the most common joint found through 1989 is the small 7260 series inside c-clip u-joint that fits yokes measuring 2-1/8" between the yoke ears. From 1961 to 1987, heavy duty 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks typically had hefty 5380 series inside c-clip u-joints that fit yokes with a 3" inside span. Heavy-Duty 1988-1993 models used 1410 series external snap ring u-joints. 7290 series inside c-clip u-joints fitting yokes with a 2-5/8" inside span can be found on many 1990-1993 trucks.

SLIP JOINTS: Up through January 2, 1986, the spline size for Slip Stubs and Yokes on 7260 series factory assembled shafts will be a 1-1/4"-16 with an external slip yoke seal. From January 2, 1986 to March 28, 1988, several combinations can be found all of which should have a rubber protective boot. Starting on March 29, 1988 all factory front CV shafts use a 1-9/32" fine spline stub and yoke shielded by QK3078 Boot. 1988 to 1993 Heavy Duty Gas trucks will have Spicer 1410 series driveshafts and 14 or 15 spline based on 16 spline slip yokes.

Boots and Clamps

Dodge switched from slip joint seals to much more effective slip joint boots in 1986. The QK3078 Boot we carry fits some 1987 model trucks and about all the 1988 to 1993 trucks with 7260 or 7290 series u-joints and the original driveshaft slip joint. Most Boot Protected Slip Joints will last the life of the vehicle as long as the Boot and Clamps are in good shape.

Center Bearings

The maximum length a steel tube driveshaft can run without support is about 5'. For most 4x2 and longer wheel base 4x4 trucks, this means a two part rear driveshaft (Propeller Shaft) with a pressed on Center Bearing (also known as Midship Support Bearing or Carrier Bearing) must be used. All 1988-1993 Gas Engine Dodge Ram 250 and Ram 350 trucks used large bore Center Bearings with a winged, U shaped steel housing.

We do not stock the Center Bearings for trucks with 7260, 7290 or 5380 series u-joints.

Slip Stubs

For the 1988 to 1993 model years, all heavy-duty gas powered Dodge Ram 250 and Ram 350 rear driveshafts will use a Slip Stub for 1410 series slip yokes. Regular Cab 4x4 trucks have a Slip Stub at the transfer case end of the one piece driveshaft. 4x2 and Longer wheel base 4x4 models use a Midship Splined Slip Stub at the back of the driveshaft that attaches to the transfer case rear output yoke. Both types of Slip Stubs are used with QU40128 Boot Kit. We do NOT stock slip stubs for any other Dodge rear driveshafts.

Given the age of this era of Dodge trucks, it is not unusual to find non-standard components particularly with the 1986 and older models with 1-1/4" diameter slip joints using a press on seal. A great many of these trucks have had the original slip joint replaced with 1-3/8" diameter 16 spline aftermarket parts. We also see a lot of shafts with internal/external snap ring conversion joints so we stock 4 Slip Yokes for modified driveshafts in addition to our stock replacement Slip Yokes.

Small Parts

Driveshaft attachment hardware is one of the most overlooked components requiring frequent replacement. Dodge used bolts with factory pre-applied Threadlocker on the bolt threads. While you can reuse these bolts if you use liquid Threadlocker, you can not compensate for either head wear or bolt fatigue. Replacing your driveshaft attachment hardware when performing other driveshaft service is good preventative maintenance.

Most driveshaft and universal joint service is done using makeshift tools and hammer on the parts until something gives service methods. Driveshaft parts and universal joints are incredibly precise components that can be easily damaged by such slam-bang work. There is a better way to perform driveshaft service using application specific press tooling and approved service procedures. Yeah, I know the Manuals and Tools are expensive, but when you consider a poorly installed front u-joint blowing out as you tool down the Interstate at 75 mph, that's going to cause an expensive and dangerous mess. I have witnessed several driveshaft failures in vehicles driving ahead of me during my travels and I can tell you a 3' long front driveshaft can do a heck of a lot of damage as it whips around jamming into the road, whacking the transmission, and smashing the floor!

Tubing

Dodge used 3" outside diameter alloy driveshaft tubing with welded seams for many 1988 to 1993 W-350 heavy-duty gas rear driveshafts. Driveshaft tubing is typically more concentric, straighter, and has a higher Rockwell hardness rating when compared to general purpose tubing. A driveshaft needs to be retubed any time the tube is bent, dinged, or creased. Retubing a driveshaft is best done by a qualified driveline shop that can balance the finished assembly, however any competent machinist with a long bed lathe can successfully retube a driveshaft.
