Rear Driveshaft Parts for 1980 to 1997 Ford Bronco F-150, F-250, and F-350
Three different rear driveshaft u-joint sizes can be found on 1980-1997 Ford full size 4x4s. Broncos and F-150 will all have 1330 and/or 1330F series u-joints as will F-250 trucks with 6 cylinder or small block gas V8 engines. F250 and F350 4x4 trucks up to late 1987 with Diesel or 460 gas engines only came with 1330 and/or 1330F U-Joints for all models. Late production 1987 and newer F-250, F350 trucks with Diesel or 460 gas engines all have higher capacity 1350 series rear driveshaft u-joints.
Three series of u-joints are used on 1980-1997 full size Ford 4x4 rear driveshafts. Rear Double Cardan CV driveshafts can be found on most Bronco and shorter wheelbase F-150 trucks. Single Cardan rear driveshafts were used on all F-250/F350 plus all long wheel base F-150 models. Until the early 1990's, Ford rear driveshafts were supplied by Dana, but later production vehicles may have driveshafts supplied by other vendors.
1330 Series U-Joints have external snap ring retention and four 1-1/16" diameter cups. Overall width of installed u-joint is 3-5/8". These u-joints are found in rear driveshaft Bronco/F150 CV joints and as the center u-joint in two-piece driveshafts in long wheelbase trucks with center support bearings. 1330 u-joints are also utilized transfer case slip yokes and in late production vehicles with flange yokes. This u-joint series was on 1980-1997 Ford full size 4x4s EXCEPT late 1987 and newer F250, F350 with 460 gas or Diesel engines.
1330F Series u-joints have two 1-1/16" diameter cups retained by external snap rings in the driveshaft yoke and two 1-1/8" cups that are secured to the transfer case or axle end yokes by u-bolts. Overall width of installed u-joint is 3-5/8". These u-joints are found at the rear axle on Bronco/F150 with CV rear driveshaft and as at the axle and transfer case end yokes that use u-bolts to retainn the u-joints on all other models EXCEPT late 1987 and newer F250, F350 with 460 gas or Diesel engines.
1350 Series u-joints have four 1-3/16" diameter cups. Overall width of installed u-joint is 3-5/8". These u-joints are used for all rear driveshaft positions in late 1987 and newer F250, F350 with 460 gas or Diesel engines. 1350 series u-joints use external snap rings to retain the cups in the driveshaft yokes and strap/bolt sets to secure the cups in transfer case and/or axle end yokes.
1987-1994 Ford F250 series 3/4 ton and F350 series 1 ton trucks with gas 460 or Diesel engines have a slip joint protected by a rubber boot. A boot protected driveshaft slip joint will usually outlast the truck as as long as the boot is intact and there is some grease on the splines. If your Boot is damaged, REPLACE IT! If your Boot is OK, but you are doing other driveshaft service, always clean and grease the splines AND replace the clamps!

The maximum length a steel tube driveshaft can run without support is about 5'. For most 4x2 and longer wheel base 4x4 trucks, this means a two part rear driveshaft (Propeller Shaft) with a pressed on Center Bearing (also known as Midship Support Bearing or Carrier Bearing) must be used. 1987-1997 Ford F-250, F-350 with Diesel or 460 gas power used large bore Center Bearings with a winged, U shaped steel housing.

Constant Velocity Parts for Broncos
Most 1980-1996 Ford Bronco 4x4s will have a Double Cardan Constant Velocity Joint at the forward end of the rear driveshaft. 1980-1989 vehicles have a greaseable CV Centering Yoke the attaches to the Transfer Case rear output yoke with four 5/16" bolts. 1990-1996 models have a non-greaseable CV Flange Yoke that attaches to the transfer case output flange with four metric bolts

Ford introduced the Ford Sterling 10.25" Corporate rear axle in 1985 for both single and dual rear wheel F-250 and F-350 applications to replace Dana 60, Dana 61, and Dana 70 rear axles which were phased out during the 1985 model year. For the entire production life of the 10.25" rear axle, only two u-joint sizes were used, however the length of the pinion splines was changed for the 1993* model year to address excessive pinion yoke spline wear issues.

Driveshaft attachment hardware is one of the most overlooked components requiring frequent replacement. While you can reuse these bolts, you can not compensate for either head wear or bolt fatigue. Most CV and universal joint service is done using makeshift tools and hammering on the parts until something gives service methods. Driveshaft parts and universal joints are incredibly precise components that can be easily damaged by such slam-bang work. There is a better way to perform driveshaft service using application specific press tooling and approved service procedures. Yeah, I know the Manuals and Tools are expensive, but when you consider that a poorly installed front u-joint blowing out as you tool down the Interstate at 75 is going to cause an expensive and dangerous mess. I have witnessed several driveshaft failures in vehicles driving ahead of me during my travels and I can tell you a 3' long front driveshaft can do a heck of a lot of damage as it whips around jamming into the road, whacking the transmission, and smashing the floor!

Ford used 3" outside diameter alloy driveshaft tubing with welded seams for most 1980 to 1997 F250 and F350 diesel driveshafts. Driveshaft tubing is typically more concentric, straighter, and has a higher Rockwell hardness rating when compared to general purpose tubing. A driveshaft needs to be retubed any time the tube is bent, dinged, or creased. Retubing a driveshaft is best done by a qualified driveline shop that can balance the finished assembly, however any competent machinist with a long bed lathe can successfully retube a driveshaft. Greaseable or non-greaseable which is better? Which u-joint type is best for YOU will depend upon your budget, operating conditions, maintenance, engine power, and expected length of ownership. From a standpoint of durability under most operating conditions, our Torque King

Our greaseable u-joints are quality, USA made parts with hot-forged crosses and single lip seals. For stock engine trucks with good maintenance, greaseable u-joints will last for a long time....but, it has been our experience that most people do not grease their vehicles as frequently as they should and most do not use a quality synthetic like Pyroplex Plus
. If you miss a lube interval during wet winter weather, water will probably infiltrate past the single lip seal and presto you have a rusty, failed u-joint!
