The Double-Cardan CV Joint is located at the transfer case of the shaft and a single Cardan universal joint is at the front (axle end). While the basic configuration of the shafts is the same for all years, the actual components used will vary depending on the year and make of Constant Velocity Joint used. Dan the Gear Man® Tech Note: The Tech Term "Cardan" refers to a conventional cross type universal joint. A Double-Cardan CV joint is a constant velocity joint that has two Cardan type universal joints as component parts. The Double Cardan Constant Velocity Front Driveshafts used on Ford Excursion and 1999-2014 Ford Super Duty 4x4s were not assembled with all the same components, so you will find significant part variations that require you to identify what pieces your particular driveshaft was built with.

Your Ford Excursion or 1999-2014 Ford Super Duty® 4x4 truck will have one of two types of non-greaseable Double-Cardan Front Driveshaft Constant Velocity Joints. Many early production trucks will have a unique, easily rebuildable, Saginaw type Double-Cardan Constant Velocity Joint that was not used on any other application. Some early model trucks and most later production vehicles will have a Spicer type Double Cardan CV. Aside from the universal joints themselves, NO constant velocity part is interchangeable between the two designs.

Click on the photo link at the left to enlarge it. As you can see, there are obvious visual differences between the two designs. You can also positively verify which style CV joint you have by measuring the distance between the center of adjacent u-joint bearing cups in the center yoke.

Almost all Ford Excursion and 1999-early 2005 Ford Super Duty 4x4s will have a TYPE A Slip Joint at the front of the Double Cardan Constant Velocity front driveshaft. 2005-2014 Super Duty trucks with build dates starting at December 6, 2004 will have Type B Slip Joints. You may also find a Type B slip joint in a very late production Excursion or if your Super Duty built prior to December 6, 2004 has as an original equipment replacement assembliy sold after mid 2005. According to the Ford Parts Listings, a few production shafts were built with a Type C Slip Joint (See BOOT Section below), however, most shafts with a Type C Slip Joint are ones where the factory Slip Stub and Yoke have been replaced.

Original Equipment Ford Excursion and 1999-2014 Super Duty 4x4 Double Cardan Front Constant Velocity Driveshafts will have one of three types of Slip Yoke Boots. Type A, 6 Bellow Boot which probably was used on over 99% of the Excursion and Super Duty shafts built prior to December 6, 2014. Type B, 9 Bellow Boots will be found Super Duty trucks with build dates starting at December 6, 2004 plus on some really late production Excursions, on 1999-2005.5 Super Duty 4x4s with original equipment replacement driveshafts installed after 2005. The Ford special Saginaw (also called AAM) CV is very similar in design to the smaller 3R series greaseable Saginaw Double Cardan Constant Velocity Joint used in numerous General Motors vehicles since the 1970's. However, the non-greaseable version used by Ford in some early Excursions and Super Duty®trucks is both larger and stronger than the the GM 3R CV. The special Ford Saginaw CV joint features u-joints with 1-3/16" diameter cups and 3-1/2" center to center span between the universal joints. The Flange Yoke is easy to rebuild using QU40741 or QU40752 Parts Kit and if needed, QU50038 Yoke Liner. See above for CV measurement information. These Saginaw type of shafts were only used in early production vehicles, but since used ones often end up in newer trucks, we are listing them for all years of this generation of Ford 4x4s

The non-greaseable, Spicer type Double-Cardan CV was used for more years so it is much more common than the Saginaw version. The heart of this constant velocity joint is a hardened steel ball filled with tiny needle bearings is pressed in the flange yoke. The needles ride on the stud of the Ball Stud Tube Yoke. The u-joint cup diameter is 1-3/16". If the flange yoke casting is in good shape, and you have access to a blind hole bearing puller, you can replace the QU40704 Ball and Socket without replacing the flange yoke casting itself

Dan the Gear Man® Tech Note: Spicer Type CV Joints have centering Balls with tiny needle bearings. The bearings ride on a machined stud that is part of the Ball Stud Tube Yoke welded to the driveshaft tubing. You can easily rebuild your CV joint yourself AS LONG AS THE STUD IS NOT WORN! The 1/2" diameter stud must be in good shape, not worn more than 0.002"-0.003", grooved, or pitted. A worn stud means you need to see a machine shop for cutting off the old yoke, plus welding and trueing the new QU40825 Ball Stud Tube Yoke. Once that is done, the shaft can be reassembled and then balanced as an assembly

Dan the Gear Man® Tech Note: When installed in a vehicle with the weight on the tires, a Driveshaft should have the slip joint positioned at about the midpoint of it's normal travel. Most full size truck slip joints have a normal travel length of 2.75" to 3". The exact point of the slip joint at rest position will vary depending on the vehicle loading and condition of the front springs. If a driveshaft is too long, you can damage the driveshaft or even break a transfer case. Too short of a driveshaft can cause increase spline wear, or worse, allowing the slip joint to separate as the axle articulates up and down while driving

We offer a heavy-duty Slip Yoke for your Ford Excursion or Super Duty Double Cardan Front Constant Velocity Driveshaft with a Type A . Slip Joint. QU40855 fits vehicles with original driveshafts built before December 6, 2004 and is the same length and spline as the factory Ford part, but it is beefed up between the yoke and boot groove for greater strength. A weak spot with the original Ford yoke at the point the yoke meets the barrel. Under high torque situations, the Ford yoke can snap at the transition point. Ford switched to a splined Yoke Shaft for 2005 model Super Duty trucks effective December 6, 2014

Driveshaft attachment hardware is one of the most overlooked components requiring frequent replacement. Ford used bolts with factory pre-applied Threadlocker on the bolt threads. While you can reuse these bolts if you use liquid Threadlocker, you can not compensate for either head wear or bolt fatigue. Replacing your driveshaft attachment hardware when performing other driveshaft service is good preventative maintenance

Most CV and universal joint service is done using makeshift tools and hammering on the parts until something gives service methods. Driveshaft parts and universal joints are incredibly precise components that can be easily damaged by such slam-bang work. There is a better way to perform driveshaft service using application specific press tooling and approved service procedures. Yeah, I know the Manuals and Tools are expensive, but when you consider that a poorly installed front u-joint blowing out as you tool down the Interstate at 75 is going to cause an expensive and dangerous mess. I have witnessed several driveshaft failures in vehicles driving ahead of me during my travels and I can tell you a 3' long front driveshaft can do a heck of a lot of damage as it whips around jamming into the road, whacking the transmission, and smashing the floor!

(Continued from Top of Page) of most individual components as different constant velocity joints and slip joint combinations were used over the years. Many early production trucks will have a unique Saginaw type Double-Cardan Constant Velocity Joint that was not used on any other application. Except for the universal joints themselves, no component of these special Saginaw CV joints are compatible with the other CV joint which is based on a Spicer design. Both CV joint types are equally effective in reducing vibration. Of the two styles, the Saginaw type is usually cheaper to rebuild, especially when the CV ball lacks lubrication, but... if you end up needing any of the castings, the parts will be more expensive.

If your truck is lifted, you may have problems with the CV joint binding due to the increased driveshaft angles. The maximum allowable CV angle for the Spicer type CV is 13°. We have been unable to find a published maximum angle spec on the Saginaw type CV, however, experience has shown the maximum operating angle is probably no more than 12°.
