We stock a number of parts for the GM 10 Bolt solid front 4x4 drive axle. GM introduced the corporate, 10 Bolt, 8-1/2" Ring Gear, beam type solid 4x4 front drive axle during the 1977 model year. The new axle was available for higher speed gear ratios than was the Dana Spicer Model 44 front axle which GM continued to use for certain ratios until 1980. Although the differential parts are totally different, the 1977 to 1981 GM Dana 44 and the GM 10 Bolt front axles share a lot of common parts from the axle u-joints out to the hubs. The GM 10 Bolt front axle was used on Chevy and GMC 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton 4x4 pickups from 1977 to 1987 and on Blazer/Jimmy, and Suburban SUVs from 1977 through 1991.

The 19 spline outer axle shafts for all 1977-1991 GM 10 Bolt front axles is the same. The Inner Shafts were made with two different spline counts. Up until mid model year 1989, all the inner shafts are 28 spline. Subsequent axles have 30 spline inner axle shafts.

On 1977-1980 GM 10 Bolt front axles, the Caliper Support Plate/Brake Shield assemblies will vary by both year and model. For the Caliper Support Plate/Brake Shield assemblies, 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton parts are always different as the 3/4 ton trucks have a larger diameter rotor. From 1977 and 1978, both left and right Caliper Support Plate/Brake Shields assemblies are the same on both sides of your axle. Effective with the 1979 model year, left and right Caliper Support Plate/Brake Shields assemblies are different.

Over the entire 15 year production life of the GM 10 Bolt 8.5" beam type front axle, only two hub and rotors were used, a 6 bolt version for 1/2 ton models and a 8 bolt version for 3/4 tons. The hub driving parts however, are a different story. For 1977-1979 Spicer Plastic Dial Hubs were used on trucks with NP205 transfer cases and solid steel hub drive gears equipped vehicles with NP203 full time transfer cases. Spicer hubs came on all 1980 trucks. I believe 1981 models all used Warn M248 plastic dial hubs, but both my memory and the GM parts books are a little vague on the issue. In 1982 GM started using automatic locking hubs. Auto hubs of different designs would continue to be used right through 1991. Warn M248 plastic dial hubs might be found as factory equipment on some work trucks from 1982-1991, but they were also the hub of choice for replacing the often unreliable auto hubs. The auto hub reliability did improve over the years, but a great many of them failed within 5 years.

QU40598 1-1/4" Wide Stepped Gear was the original design. Outside spline that engages wheel hub is 27/32" wide. These gears are stepped on the outboard side to aid in removal and to space the gear back from the hub cap. QU40598 gears were usually used with QU40050 Spring and QU40035 Spring Plate. The back edge of the snap ring groove is approximately 5/16" from the end.

QU40428U Used 7/8" Wide Single Width Gear Has full length ID and OD splines. These gears have 2 to 10 holes in them to reduce the weight and provide a way to remove them with a hook. QU40428 gears were generally used with QU40050 Spring and QU40035 Spring Plate in the 1970s or QU40654 1-1/4" long Split Steel Steel Spacer in the 1980s and 1990s. To use this gear, your axle shaft has to have the back edge of a snap ring groove located about 5/8" from the end.
QU40657U Used 7/8" Wide Stepped Gear was the most common type from the the late 1970's to the late 1980s. Outside spline that engages wheel hub is a little under 5/8" wide. 1977-1991 GM 10 Bolt Beam Type Front Axles all use a pinion yoke made for a Spicer 1310 series universal joint.

Sometimes, you just need one or two small parts to get back on the road. Between the small parts listed in this section and many others listed under part specific headings elsewhere on the page, we probably have that pesky little part you have to have but just can't find anywhere else.
1977-1991 GM 10 Bolt Front Axles use a double spindle nut set with a lockwasher for front wheel bearing adjustment and retention. The inner and outer nuts are the same for all years, but the Lockwasher was changed in 1982 when automatic locking hubs were introduced. The Inner Nut has a pin that engages with one of the holes in the lockwasher. The Outer Nut is a jam nut.

The dead spindle design of the 1977-1991 GM 10 Bolt front axle uses a needle bearing to support the outer axle shaft. To protect the bearing and control axial thrust, a 4 piece set consisting of an Axle Shaft Slinger, Large V-Seal, Small V-Seal, and Thrust Washer was used. GM used several different steering knuckles in 1977-1991 GM 10 Bolt front axles. The differences are in the length of the spindle studs, the tie rod mounts and whether or not there is a tapped hole that takes a small bolt used to stabilize the brake shield. The ball joint and spindle holes machined in the knuckles are the same for all years.
1977-1991 GM 10 Bolt front axles use a short, adjustable drag link that couples the steering gear pitman arm to the axle steering arm bolted to the top of the left knuckle. A long, adjustable tie rod attaches to the integral knuckle steering arms.

All the GM 10 Bolt front axles used the same wheel bearings and wheel seal. It does not matter if your 4x4 is a Blazer, Jimmy, 1/2 ton, or 3/4 ton, all models with GM 10 bolt front axles use the exact same bearings and seal.
General Motors used the same wheel bearing and seal numbers for the entire 1977 to 1991 production run of GM 10 Bolt front drive axles. However, and will vary by year, so order those components as needed from the sections above. We offer Wheel Bearing Part/Tool Kits with or without bearing and seal installation tools.
