GM used the New Process NP208C chain drive part time transfer case for Blazers, Jimmys, Suburbans,1/2 ton and 3/4 ton "square" body style pickups from 1981 through 1987. For the 1988 model year, the NP208C was only installed in Blazers, Jimmys, and Suburbans. The NP208C is a light weight aluminum case transfer case is synchronized between 4x2 and 4x4 modes for use with automatic locking hubs. NP208C Transfer Cases have a 1:1 high range and 2.61:1 planetary gear low range. The NP208C generally provides reasonable service for the average user, but it was never considered to be a particularly strong or durable unit in full size trucks used for tough vocational or off road applications. The NP208C was replaced in Blazers, Jimmys, and Suburbans by the New Process NP241C transfer case effective with the 1989 model year.
NP208 Transfer Cases use a unique mix of ball, caged needle, and flat thrust bearings. The small diameter of the thrust bearing rollers make these transfer cases particularly sensitive to severe damage from low, incorrect, or contaminated lube oil. If you have your NP208 apart, you should replace ALL the bearings while you are it. Failure to do so may lead to the catastrophic failure of one or bearings and the destruction of hard parts that are now almost impossible to find

In New Process NP208 Transfer Cases, the Drive Chain is only under power in 4x4 modes. For 4x2 operation, the input shaft is directly coupled to the rear output shaft. Contrary to popular belief, a worn or stretched NP208 chain can not cause a clunk in 4x2 mode, however a stretched chain CAN and will wear a hole in the soft aluminum transfer case if it sags enough to contact the housing. If you are rebuilding the NP208 transfer case in your vintage 4x4 REPLACE the chain!
