1957-1971 Jeep Dana Spicer Model 53 Semi-Floating Rear Axle

Dana 53 Semi-Float 9-1/4" ring gear rear axles were used by Jeep in 1957-1967 FC170 single rear wheel trucks and many 1962-1971 J-Series pickups with Gross Vehicle Weights up to 7600 pounds. The Dana 53 was built in a pure form with Dana 53 center and wheel ends and as a hybrid that used a Dana 44 center and Dana 53 wheel ends. We can supply some service parts for the Model 53, but most major parts for these axles are long gone.

product note

Dana Spicer Model 53 semi-floating rear axles with tapered axle shafts have a 9-1/4" ring gear and are unique to Jeep. The diff pan cover measures 10-5/16" x 10-13/16" and it is somewhat round with flat edges for the vertical sides. You will also find Dana 44 Diff x Dana 53 wheel end hybrid axles in some 120" wheel base 1962-1964 J-Series trucks with 5 digit VIN code A and a GVW of 5500 pounds (and perhaps others). For the 1966 to 1971 model years, The Dana 53 is only listed in Jeep Parts Books for 5th digit VIN Code X (6000 lb. GVW) and Y (7000 lb. GVW). However, given the age of these vehicles, and knowledge that Jeep built many special purpose models, do not be surprised if your vintage Jeep has a non-standard rear axle.

1962-1964 with Jeep 230 OHC 6 Cylinder Engine: The Dana 53 was used for GVWs from 4000 to 7600 pounds, although the Dana 53 is most likely to be found in vehicles with VIN code B (6600 lb. GVW) and VIN code C (7600 lb. GVW). For the lower GVW VIN Code F (4000 lb. GVW) and VIN Code E, (5000 lb. GVW) you are most likely to find a Dana 44. For VIN code A (5500 lb. GVW) Jeep used straight Dana 44s, a hybrid 44/53, and a straight Dana 53
1965-1971 with AMC 6 Cylinder or GM V8 Engines: he Dana 53 was used with most but not all VIN Code X (6000 lb. GVW) and VIN Code Y (7000 lb. GVW). The other axle used for some of these VIN Codes was a semi-float Dana 60 with flanged axle shafts. The Dana 60 is common with trucks using the 350 V8, but Jeep does list it for 232-S6, 258-S6, and 327 V8 vehicles
Axle Shafts: All Jeep Dana 53 Axle Shafts are semi-floating and use a separate, press on wheel hub.The axle shaft is tapered to fit the wheel hub center hole. The outer end of Dana 53 axle shafts are threaded
