Early versions of the NV4500 transmission used needle bearings with metal cages. Due to customer complaints of the noise, New Venture switched to Torrington and Luk plastic caged bearings for everything except first design reverse idler bearings and the flat QU10134 Thrust Bearing. Our needle bearings are either the exact original equipment numbers specified by New Venture or current production replacements. Unlike all the NP435 and SM465 4 speed transmissions it replaced, NV4500 gears rotate on bearings instead of bushings or direct fit gears. With bearing supported gears, NV4500 transmissions can be operated in vocational applications for long periods in low gears without damage to the gears or shafts.

The NV4500 Transmission uses Timken® tapered roller bearings for the Input/Output shaft, Mainshaft, and Countershaft. Of the 8 part cup and cone part numbers, six are high-performance versions of standard size bearings. These high-performance bearings can be identified by a suffix letters following the base number stamped or etched in each part. Due to the extreme loads imposed on the transmission, both the diesel and gas engines are beyond the engineering parameters of standard series bearings. Thus, using the original equipment Timken® bearing numbers is mandatory for a long-lasting overhaul. The bearings we supply, both individually and in our Torque King® Kits are the exact Timken® part numbers as specified by New Venture.

Depending upon the year, NV4500 transmissions will have either 2 or 3 bearing spacers. All models will have a two mainshaft spacers. There is one spacer between the reverse gear bearing and reverse gear clutch snap ring plus a another spacer between the 3rd gear bearing and the snap ring that retains the 2nd-3rd gear thrust washer. These two spacers are now made from Teflon, but in early production transmissions they were steel. 1992-1996 transmissions will also have a spacer between the two reverse idler gear bearings.

QU10121 Spacer, NV4500 Reverse Idler Bearing Is used on 1992-1996 model year transmissions to separate the the reverse idler bearings.
NV4500 transmissions use several different specialized bolts. Most NV4500 bolts have factory applied threadlocker and it is recommended they be replaced anytime they are removed, although most can be reused once if medium strength threadlocker is applied to the threads. The special, metric 12 point tailshaft housing bolts almost always require replacement if the truck is operated in areas where roads are treated with corrosive salts. When doing major service on your NV4500 transmission, always inspect the fasteners and replace any that show signs of corrosion, fatigue, or wear.

The infamous "NV4500 5th Gear Failure" is almost always wrongly blamed on the nut. Having your nut back off is a consequence of an inadequately supported mainshaft 5th gear on stock and full spline mainshafts. Radial and axial movement of the gear will loosen the nut. No nut design will prevent 5th gear failures although they may delay them. The only way to solve the problem is to redesign the shaft, gear, and nut set which we did with our Torque King® mainshaft sets. See Tech Article 5th Gear Failures and Solutions for more information

How to identify early and late shift fork pads: (The late model pads are on the top) The End Pads are NOT interchangeable! In 2005, the early black end pads were replaced by white nylon pads.
Late Maximum Length: 2.05" (Universal fit, Will also fit early forks)
Early Maximum Length: 2.21" (Do not use on late forks)
Late is closed on lower end and slightly curved to fit fork contour
Early is open on ends & rectangular in shape.
BEWARE OF AFTERMARKET SHIFT FORK PADS! The aftermarket pads we have seen are very brittle and they can break apart under normal shifting loads. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS use the correct genuine NVG shift fork pads for your model!!!

QU10107 Spring, Shift Finger Plunger Spring Is used on 1-2 and 5-R shift lugs to put tension against the shift lever stub. These springs are only found in the early shift covers that had the integral shift tower (1992-1994 GM and 1992-1997 Dodge). Not a common part requiring replacement, but if your shift lever feels "sloppy" in neutral weak plunger springs are the likely culprits. Made in U.S.A.

The NV4500 Top Cover was not designed to allow for replacement of the 3-4 and 1-2 Shift Forks. As detailed in my TM1003 NV4500 Service Manual, we have come up with a way to easily service your NV4500 Top Cover using one of these Kits. Each Kit includes 3 Shift Rail Bore Plugs, 7 Roll Pins for the Shift Forks/Lugs, 3 Alloy Steel Button Head Screws, 3 Stainless Steel Sealing Washers, 2 Drill Bits, Tap, and 242 Threadlocker.
