QU50044AM 32 Spline Input Shaft for GM NP205 fits 1979 to 1984 Chevy and GMC trucks with Direct Mount (Married) New Process NP205 Gear Drive Transfer Cases and Turbo 400 or 700R4 Automatic Transmissions. Imported.
Our GM parts books do not list a 32 spline NP205 prior to 1979. However, it is pretty common to find 32 spline NP205s in older trucks as most of the remaining 1973-1978 trucks that originally had a Turbo 400 with the full-time NP203 have been retrofitted with a part time NP205.
After 1984, GM used TK50027 32 spline input shaft on NP205 transfer cases behind the Turbo 400 (1985-1990) and 4l80E (1991) automatic transmissions.
The most common wear issue with NP205 input shafts is worn clutch teeth. It does not take much wear on the input shaft and sliding clutch collar teeth for the transfer case to "jump" out of high range. If your input shaft has significant wear on the clutch teeth, replace it and the sliding collar.
NP205 Input Shafts may also have damaging wear on other locations. Input shaft with significant wear that can be felt with your fingernail should be replaced with a new shaft along with the matching component. Look for wear at these locations:
Rear Bearing Pilot: Indentations from the needle rollers that fit in the front of the rear output shaft
Helical Gear Teeth: If run short of oil, teeth will show temperature discoloration and/or visible wear
Input Splines: Visible wear on the splines is usually caused by lack of lubrication
