| 1984.5-1993 Dana Spicer Model 70 Rear Axles in Dodge Ram 250 and 350 series trucks have a Bill of Material Number (BOM) stamped on a Build Tag (red arrow) attached to the differential by two of the differential cover bolts (yellow arrows). The BOM number is a 6 digit number beginning with a 6 plus a dash number (ex: 605523-3). They can be used to determine not only the axle model, but also what components the axle was originally built with. We often ask for this number to insure we provide you with the exact parts you need for your truck.
All 1984.5 to 1993 Dodge Model 70 rear axles will have a BOM that starts with "605". If you have a 1984 axle with a BOM that begins with "603", refer to our 1972-1984.5 Dodge Model70 Rear Axle Parts Web Page.
Each different BOM number signifies an engineering part change which may be minor or major and may involve one or more parts. The dash number indicates the axle ratio and differential type (open or locking). Unfortunately, these tags are often missing on trucks that had prior differential service. |

Not all Dana axles have the model number cast on the housing. It can be very difficult to tell a Dana 60 from a Dana 70, as they have nearly identical covers with exactly the same bolt pattern. One way to tell if you have a Dana 60 or Dana 70 is to measure the cover flange height (yellow arrow). The Dana 60 flange height is approximately 1" high. The Dana 70 flange height is about 1¼" high. | |||

Almost all the 1984.5-1993 Dodge Dana 70 Rear Axles are equipped with Bendix 12" rear drum brakes. The brake shoe width varied from 2.5" to 3.0" depending upon the exact application. At this time, we mainly stock the important, but hard to find and out of production parking brake mounting hardware. Most 1987-1993 Dodge Ram 250 and Ram 350 trucks are equipped with anti-lock brakes. The rear axle ABS system used on this era of Dodge trucks is rather crude by today's standards. The signal is generated by a toothed steel tone ring (QU40290) pressed on the differential case next to the ring gear. A magnetic pickup is located in the top of the axle housing above the tone ring. Since the unit is sensing differential speed and not the speed of either rear wheel, it can not be used to selectively apply the individual rear brakes. | Link to Our Dodge Web Page Index | ||

Dan the Gear Man® Tech Note: Gear set breakage caused by worn and loose Differential Bearings is one of the biggest killers of rear axles. When the differential bearings wear, the backlash between the ring gear and pinion gear will change. Most often, it increases as the ring gear side differential bearing usually takes the brunt of the wear. As the backlash increases beyond approximately 0.010", the chances of breaking a gear tooth increase dramatically. Additionally, a rough and worn differential bearing is very likely to break free and spin on the differential case which will usually mean the case must be replaced. With the Model 70, one often finds the differential bearing cups have worn sideways into the axle housing Sometimes, the wear is minor and can be compensated for by re-shimming the differential, but in most cases, the axle bore faces will need to be re-cut with an Axle Bore Facing Tool such as the QT1000 or the axle housing will need to be replaced. To minimize the chances of wrecking expensive differential parts, I recommend completely re-bearing Dana 60 and 70 axles every 125,000 miles and Dana 80's at or before 150,000 miles. | |||

In the mid 1970's Dana made a differential cover design change to heavy gauge covers with flat mating flanges. Unlike the previous, thin gauge covers with embossed flanges which were made for use with a cut gasket, the new design, thick gauge covers are designed for sealing with RTV. If you desire, you can still use a gasket with the new type cover by combining the gasket with thin films of RTV. The original setup for Dodge Ram Model 70 rear axle used the QU40022 Pinion Nut and QU40023 Pinion Washer, however, with the debut of the Cummins Diesel in 1989, this combination was found to be inadequate as the pinion washer would flex and bend under load. Spindle Nuts have two functions and they are to provide for correct wheel bearing adjustment and to keep your wheel hubs in place. We stock both the original equipment single nut and our Torque King® double spindle nut upgrade sets for your big Dodge Dana 70 rear axle. Stock Spindle Nuts and Spindle Lock Wedges are "Single Use" parts that are designed to be installed once and only once. For safety reasons, you must discard both the nut and wedge if they are removed from the spindle for any reason. Both parts lose a percentage of their resistance to coming off when they are removed. You may hear of cases where this type of factory nut has come off while the truck was being driven. Dan the Gear Man® Tech Note: QU40077 Spindle Nuts and QU40089 Spindle Lock Wedges are "Single Use", genuine Ford and Dana Spicer original equipment components. These parts are designed to be installed once and only once. For safety reasons, you must discard both the nut and wedge if they are removed from the spindle for any reason. Both parts lose a percentage of their resistance to coming off when they are removed. You may hear of cases where this type of factory nut has come off while the truck was being driven. Invariably, these failures involve nuts and wedges that have been reused. I am not aware of a single instance of a properly installed new nut and wedge coming off like that. In my opinion, the original equipment nut design is as safe to use as our double nut sets sold above as long as you follow the rules. | |||
