Parts for AAM 925 Front Axles in 2003-2010 Dodge Ram 4x4 Trucks
The American Axle Manufacturing (AAM) Model 925 Front Beam Axle debuted in the 2003 model year Dodge Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 4x4 trucks. The AAM 925 replaced the Dana-Spicer Model 60 front axle used in the 1994-2002 versions of the big Ram trucks. The differential and gear set are adequate for the stock Cummins Diesel or gasoline engines and rarely pose major problems unless severely abused or neglected. However, the same can not be said for the rest of the axle. Ball Joint failures with this axle are a chronic and nearly unsolvable problem due to the size and design of the steering knuckle. The life expectancy of the original wheel hubs and axle universal joints is fair, but does not seem to equal the earlier Dana-Spicer Axles under most conditions.

Make ball joint removal and reinstallation easy with the optional TS1082 or TS4851 Ball Joint Press Sets! Unlike older trucks, the ball joints are pressed into the axle itself, not the steering knuckle, so you can't use a shop press like the 94-99 trucks. Dan the Gear Man® Tech Note 1:To replace the Ball Joints on your AAM 925 axle, you need a Ball Joint Press Set like out TS1082. Why? Because the Ball Joints are a VERY tight fit in the axle. Even if you successfully drove out the old Ball Joints, you would wreck new ones by driving them in.
Dan the Gear Man® Tech Note 2: The first time an AAM axle has to comes apart, it is usually an absolute WITCH to separate the wheel hub assemblies from the steering knuckle as AAM did not use any anticorrosion compound between the wheel hub flange and steering knuckle. I strongly suggest you get TSB4586 so you know what you are getting into. Almost all the wheel hubs we sell for these AAM axles are to replace original hubs wrecked by slam bang disassembly methods. The good new is, if you properly reassemble your axle, the next time you need to take the hubs off, they will come right off with no trouble at all.

Dan the Gear Man® Safety Warning: There is a lot of chat on the Internet about using your power steering to force the hub out of the knuckle. It may work, but it is insanely dangerous to do, plus it severely stresses the steering linkage, steering gear, and frame. If you have a suicide complex fine, go ahead and do it, just make sure I am not on the same road you are when your steering fails and you kill yourself!

Dan the Gear Man® Tech Note: During assembly, as you tighten the pinion nut, the outer pinion bearing is forced against this Spacer. It usually takes several hundred pounds of torque to initiate compression of the Spacer which will slowly collapse as you further tighten the Pinion Nut. The trick is to tighten the nut only to the point you get the desired rotating torque for the pinion (measured in INCH pounds). Go too far and you have to start over with a new nut and Preload Spacer. NEVER, EVER back off a pinion nut to reduce the pinion rotating torque!
