Front Constant Velocity Driveshaft Parts for 2003-2009 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 4x4 Trucks
We stock a complete line of Double Cardan front CV driveshaft parts for 2003  to 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 and Dodge Ram 3500 4x4 trucks. These Dodge 4x4s use a Double-Cardan Constant Velocity (CV) Joint at the transfer case end, and a conventional single Carden universal joint with a flange yoke and axle end for the Front Driveshaft's. While the basic configuration of the shafts is the same for all years, the actual components used will vary depending upon the year and engine/transmission combination.

A Double-Cardan CV joint is a constant velocity joint that has two Cardan type universal joints as component parts. Driveshaft Identification
How to Identify What Parts You Need:
Although the Front Driveshafts on 2003-2009 Dodge Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 trucks look to be quite similar to the untrained eye, there have been several engineering changes over the years so you have to identify what you have to order the specific parts needed to get you back on the road. Since early and late production driveshaft assemblies are often interchangeable, you MUST verify what components you have before ordering the correct parts. The photos below will show you what information is needed to ID your components.

WHICH CV DO I HAVE? Measure the Cup Diameter of any of the eight Universal Joint Cups in the Double Carden Constant Velocity Joint. Most 2003 and some 2004 trucks with original driveshafts will have cups that are 1-1/16" in diameter. All others will have 1-3/16" diameter cups

WHAT SIZE IS MY FRONT U-JOINT? Identify the Front Universal Joint by either the cup diameter or the type of retaining clip. 2003 to 2005 shafts and many 2006-2009 shafts will have a front universal joint that has 1-1/8" diameter cups retained by plastic injections (original U-Joints) or by internal c-clips that fit in grooves machined in the cups (replacement universal joints). Some 2006-2009 front driveshafts will have larger universal joints with 1-3/16" diameter cups. The larger 1-3/16" diameter cup size u-joints use external snap rings that fit in grooves machined in the yokes.

HOW DO I ID MY SLIP YOKE? A new slip yoke design was used from 2006 to 2009 for some applications. The most obvious difference is the location of the protective boot. The Type 2 shaft uses a male spline yoke shaft and has the boot attached to the yoke shaft near the u-joint yoke. Older style Type 1 Shafts have a female spline slip yoke. The boot attaches to the inboard end of the yoke barrel. The Type 2 Slip Yoke is also found on late production original equipment replacement shafts.
   
     
     
Boots and Boot Clamps
Your front driveshaft slip joint is protected by a flexible rubber boot which keeps crud out and grease in. The boot should be immediately replaced if torn or damaged. To obtain maximum slip joint life, you need to take the slip joint apart to clean and re-grease the splines every few years or after extended immersion under water. Dan the Gear Man® Tech Note: The 1/2" diameter Centering Stud on your Ball Stud Tube Yoke (QU40807, QU40810) MUST be in good condition to successfully rebuild your CV joint (See TSB3503, TM3000, or TM3318). If there is visible grooving or if the stud is worn more than 0.002"-.003" you will need to replace your Ball Stud Tube Yoke. While not difficult for a skilled machinist, this will require lathe work, welding, and straightening of the shaft. It is also strongly recommended you have the shaft rebalanced after assembly.  
Front Flange Yokes
The Flange Yoke is the forward most part of your front driveshaft. The yoke side of the Flange Yoke fits your front driveshaft universal joint. The Serrated front side gets bolted to your front axle pinion companion flange with either QU11028 or QU70008 Bolts. There are two sizes used depending upon your universal joint size. For those of you with 2003-2009 TYPE 1 front CV driveshafts with 1-1/8" cup diameter u-joints, you can upgrade to the stronger 1-3/16" cup size TK40719 u-joint by replacing your original flange yoke and slip yoke with QU11079 Flange Yoke and QU11078 Slip Yoke. Dan the Gear Man® Tech Note: Dodge used several similar Double-Cardan Front Constant Velocity Driveshafts, but each type will have certain unique parts even though the assemblies may interchange. For instance, in the CV Joint, most 2003 and some 2004 trucks use a small size u-joint which has 1-1/16" diameter cups. All others are equipped with the larger size u-joint, 1-3/16" cups in the CV heads. You must correctly identify what type of components your driveshaft uses before you ordering any parts or kits. To help you through this simple, but essential process, please see Tech Notes 3-104, 3-132. and 3-133 in the Manual and Tech Information section above. You need to verify your CV shaft component sizes to ensure you order the correct Kit. Remember, an old truck may have a newer shaft or vice-versa, so be sure to order the parts by type, not just by year!

This Yoke WILL NOT fit QU50230 original equipment fine spline spline stubs!!!!!
QU40843 16 Spline Slip Stub fits the 2.5" x 0.095" wall thickness tubing used on 2003-2012 Dodge Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 Double Cardan front CV driveshafts. The length from end of spline to weld point is approximately 19/32" longer than the stubs used on most of the 1994 to 2002 Dodge original equipment front driveshafts. Use with QU40906 Coarse Spline Slip Yoke.
Small Parts
Driveshaft attachment hardware is one of the most overlooked components requiring frequent replacement. Ford used bolts with factory pre-applied Threadlocker on the bolt threads. While you can reuse these bolts if you use liquid Threadlocker, you can not compensate for either head wear or bolt fatigue. QU11028 Dodge Ram Original Equipment Internal Torx® Type Front Bolts are genuine original equipment parts with pre-applied threadlocking compound These Bolts are used to fasten your front driveshaft to the Front Axle Pinion Flange. Requires 4 per driveshaft. Use with QT1213 Torx® Bit.
QU70008 Front Flange Bolt for 2003-up Dodge Ram for bolting the front flange yoke to your front axle's companion flange. Hardened, Class 10.9 Hex Head Bolt is much easier to remove and install since you can use either a socket or box end wrench instead of the little Torx® bit required for the oem QU11028 Bolts sold above. Requires 4 per driveshaft.
Tools
Most CV and universal joint service is done using makeshift tools and hammering on the parts until something gives service methods. Driveshaft parts and universal joints are incredibly precise components that can be easily damaged by such slam-bang work. There is a better way to perform driveshaft service using application specific press tooling and approved service procedures. Yeah, I know the Manuals and Tools are expensive, but when you consider that a poorly installed front u-joint blowing out as you tool down the Interstate at 75 is going to cause an expensive and dangerous mess. I have witnessed several driveshaft failures in vehicles driving ahead of me during my travels and I can tell you a 3' long front driveshaft can do a heck of a lot of damage as it whips around jamming into the road, whacking the transmission, and smashing the floor!

QT1065 Series Long Throat C-Frame Ball Joint Presses are designed to accept a variety of interchangeable tooling for performing Ball Joint and Universal Joint service on your 4x4. A heavy-duty tool that will get the job done when used with the appropriate tooling for your big Dodge Ram. 
QT4008 Medium Size U-Joint Separator Yoke is used with a QT1065 series C-frame Press and QT4016 Press Anvil to easily remove the 3 universal joints on 1994 to 2002 Dodge Ram Double-Cardan Constant Velocity front driveshafts. By placing the press force against the u-joint cross, the amount of pressure needed to break a cup free is halved and the chances of damaging the yokes is greatly reduced. Works on rusted in or tight fitting u-joints.

QT4010 1" Press Tip is used with a QT1065 series C-frame Press and QT4016 Press Anvil to easily install universal joints with 1-1/16" to 1-3/16" diameter cups on most common light truck driveshafts and 4x4 front axle shafts.

QT4016 1-1/16" to 1-3/16" Capacity U-Joint Press Anvils used with a QT1065 series C-frame Press and either QT4008 Medium U-Joint Separator Yoke or QT4010 1" Press Tip to easily remove and install all three universal joints from any stock type 2003-up Dodge Ram 2500 to Ram 5500 front driveshaft.

QT1067 Ball Joint Installer is used with our long-throat C-Frame presses to install both Upper and Lower Ball Joints on 2000-2002 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 4x4 trucks with the Dana Spicer Model 60/248FBI front drive axle. Greaseable or non-greaseable which is better? Which u-joint type is best for YOU will depend upon your budget, operating conditions, maintenance, engine power, and expected length of ownership. From a standpoint of durability under most operating conditions, our Torque King® cold-forged factory lubed universal joints will outlast our Greaseable universal joints by a considerable margin due the the hardness of the cold-forged cross and superiority of the multiple lip seals especially if your Cummins Diesel has enhanced horsepower. Our greaseable u-joints are quality, USA made parts with hot-forged crosses and single lip seals. For stock engine trucks with good maintenance, greaseable u-joints will last for a long time....but, it has been our experience that most people do not grease their vehicles as frequently as they should and most do not use a quality synthetic like Pyroplex Plus. If you miss a lube interval during wet winter weather, water will probably infiltrate past the single lip seal and presto you have a rusty, failed u-joint! Link to Our Dodge Web Page Index

(Continued from above) the two universal joints were not greaseable on early production trucks; however, during the 2005 model year, a flush type grease fitting was added to the Ball Stud Tube Yoke and the constant velocity u-joint size was increased. While not easy to access in the vehicle, it is possible to lubricate the CV Ball and Socket on those 2005 and newer shafts, which will greatly extend the life of your driveshaft.

All Dodge Ram 2500 to 5500 series trucks (plus the discontinued Sterling Bullet) based on the same chassis are now built in Mexico as are many of the original equipment front driveshaft parts.
