Driveshaft Identification
For all 1989 to 1993 Cummins Diesel powered Dodge D250, W250, D350, and W350 trucks Dodge standardized on a an 4-3/16" wide external snap ring u-joint with 1-3/16" diameter cups. For normal service parts, all you really need to know is if your driveline a single shaft part with 2 universal joints or 2 shaft assembly with 3 universal joints and a Center Bearing. Boots and Boot Clamps

1989-1993 Dodge D250/W250* series 3/4 ton and D350/W350* series 1 ton trucks with Cummins Diesel engines have a slip joint protected by a rubber boot. A boot protected driveshaft slip joint will usually outlast the truck as as long as the boot is intact and there is some grease on the splines. If your Boot is damaged, REPLACE IT! If your Boot is OK, but you are doing other driveshaft service, always clean and grease the splines AND replace the clamps!

Center Bearings

The maximum length a steel tube driveshaft can run without support is about 5'. For most 4x2 and longer wheel base 4x4 trucks, this means a two part rear driveshaft (Propeller Shaft) with a pressed on Center Bearing (also known as Midship Support Bearing or Carrier Bearing) must be used. All 1989-1993 Cummins Diesel powered Dodge Ram 250 and Ram 350 trucks used large bore Center Bearings with a winged, U shaped steel housing.

Slip Stubs
For the 1989 to 1993 model years, all Cummins Diesel powered Dodge Ram 250 and Ram 350 rear driveshafts will use a Slip Stub. Regular Cab 4x4 trucks have a Slip Stub at the transfer case end of the one piece driveshaft. 4x2 and Longer wheel base 4x4 models use a Midship Splined Slip Stub at the back of the driveshaft that attaches to the transmission or transfer case rear output yoke. Slip Yokes
According to the Dodge parts books, several different Slip Yoke part numbers were used on 1989 to 1993 Diesel trucks. While that is probably true, the notes I made when we were doing our NV4500 transmission conversions showed only 2 sizes were used on manual transmission 4x4 trucks. Certainly there may be some other lengths/spline counts out there especially on auto trans or 4x2 trucks, so if you don't see what you are looking for, e-mail us the length and spline size/count and we will see if we stock the yoke you need. Small Parts
Driveshaft attachment hardware is one of the most overlooked components requiring frequent replacement. Dodge used bolts with factory pre-applied Threadlocker on the bolt threads. While you can reuse these bolts if you use liquid Threadlocker, you can not compensate for either head wear or bolt fatigue. Replacing your driveshaft attachment hardware when performing other driveshaft service is good preventative maintenance. Link to Our Dodge Page Index

Tools
Most driveshaft and universal joint service is done using makeshift tools and hammer on the parts until something gives service methods. Driveshaft parts and universal joints are incredibly precise components that can be easily damaged by such slam-bang work. There is a better way to perform driveshaft service using application specific press tooling and approved service procedures. Yeah, I know the Manuals and Tools are expensive, but when you consider that a poorly installed front u-joint blowing out as you tool down the Interstate at 75 mph is going to cause an expensive and dangerous mess. I have witnessed several driveshaft failures in vehicles driving ahead of me during my travels and I can tell you a 5' long rear driveshaft can do a heck of a lot of damage as it whips around! By placing the press force against the u-joint cross, the amount of pressure needed to break a cup free is halved and the chances of damaging the yokes is greatly reduced. Tubing and Tube Yokes
Dodge used 3" outside diameter alloy driveshaft tubing with welded seams for most 1989 to 1993 250 and 350 diesel rear driveshafts. Driveshaft tubing is typically more concentric, straighter, and has a higher Rockwell hardness rating when compared to general purpose tubing. A driveshaft needs to be retubed any time the tube is bent, dinged, or creased. Retubing a driveshaft is best done by a qualified driveline shop that can balance the finished assembly, however any competent machinist with a long bed lathe can successfully retube a driveshaft. Universal Joints
The Cummins Diesel engine puts a massive load on your rear driveshaft universal joints. We have been working on this generation of Cummins powered Dodge truck since the early 1990's and we have found conventional hot-forged greaseable u-joints like our QU40789 joint do not have a hard enough cross to take the Cummins torque long term without the bearing rollers indenting into the cross journals. We tried every brand of greaseable u-joint made, none of which will last more than a year or two without wear issues for our typical work truck customer. For a given year/wheel base/engine/transmission/transfer case/rear axle combination, complete shaft assemblies will be interchangeable. Since there are so many possible wheel base and powertrain combinations, it is usually quite difficult to find a good used driveshaft that exactly matches yours. For that reason, we stock the individual components that are currently available including weld yokes and tubing so you can repair a damaged shaft and keep your Dodge on the road.

The most common rear driveshaft problem with this generation of Cummins powered Dodge trucks is poor universal joint life when using regular universal joints with hot-forged crosses.
