Rear Driveshaft Parts for 2003-up Dodge Ram 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500 Trucks
The rear driveshafts on 2003 and newer Dodge Ram 2500, 3500, 4500 and Dodge Ram 5500 4x4 trucks use conventional single Carden universal joints. The front of the shaft has a Slip Yoke which slides into the rear of the transmission or transfer case. A flange yoke connects the rear of your driveshaft to the rear axle companion flange. Short wheelbase trucks will have a simple one-piece shaft with 2 universal joints. Longer wheel base models have 2 piece drive lines with a Center Bearing to support the middle of the shaft assembly. Most rear driveshaft for these trucks use steel tubing, however some drivetrain combinations will have aluminum driveshafts.

While the basic configuration of the shafts is the same for all years, the actual components used will vary depending upon the year and engine/transmission combination. At least three different universal joints have been used so you have to identify your specific components before ordering the correct replacements.

All Dodge Ram 2500 to 5500 series trucks plus the Sterling Bullet based on the same chassis are now built in Mexico as are most of the original equipment rear driveshaft parts.

Boots
2003 and newer Dodge Ram trucks with two piece rear driveshafts supported by a Center Bearing have a midship slip joint protected by a rubber boot. A boot protected driveshaft slip joint will usually outlast the truck as as long as the boot is intact and there is some grease on the splines. If your Boot is damaged, REPLACE IT! If your Boot is OK, but you are doing other driveshaft service, always clean and grease the splines AND replace the clamps! Link to Vehicle Make or Category Links

Center Bearing Kits and Parts
The maximum length a steel tube driveshaft can run without support is about 5'. For most 4x2 and longer wheel base 4x4 trucks, this means a two part rear driveshaft (Propeller Shaft) with a pressed on Center Bearing (also known as Midship Support Bearing or Carrier Bearing) must be used to support the center of the driveshaft. Flange Yokes
2003 and newer Dodge Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 trucks have flange yokes at the back of the driveshaft that mate to a companion flange on your AAM rear axle. The mating surface my be flat or serrated depending upon the year. Since Dodge has used several different u-joint sizes, you must verify both the u-joint size and mating surface type before ordering your new flange yoke. Link to Vehicle Make or Category Links

Slip Yokes
Dodge has used a number of rear output driveshaft slip yokes for 2003 and newer Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 trucks. All these yokes are made for AAM series universal joints. Gas V8 and most Rams with automatic transmissions will use AAM 1415 series u-joints with 1-3/16" diameter cups. Most Diesel trucks with manual transmissions have 4.178" wide, 1485 series u-joints with 1-3/8" diameter cups. Guys, I wish it was simpler, but before ordering your new slip yoke, you must verify the u-joint size, spline count, and length PLUS decide on a dampened or undampened style yoke. Universal Joints
Dodge has used several sizes of rear driveshaft universal joints for 2003 and newer Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 trucks. Always verify your cup diameter and overall u-joint width before ordering replacement universal joints! Most gasoline powered trucks and many automatic transmission equipped Diesel models use the medium size. Most Diesel, manual transmission pickups and early chassis cab vehicles will have the large size which is available in both greaseable and non-greaseable versions. 2007-on Ram 3500 to 5500 chassis cab trucks typically have the extra large u-joint, but again, verify what YOUR truck has before ordering!
