|Ford was the only vehicle manufacturer to use Dana Twin Traction Beam® Independent Front Suspension Axles which can be found on 1980-1996 model year Ford 4x4s. The Twin Traction Beam® IFS Axle line includes the coil spring Models 28 and 35 found in Bronco II, Explorers and Ranger pickups, the Model 44 which was used in fill size Broncos, F-150 (coil springs), and light duty F-250 pickups (leaf springs), and the leaf sprung 4500 to 4600 pound rated Model 50IFS axle in heavy GVW F-250 and 1980-1985.5 F-350 trucks. Dana 44IFS axles in F250 models after 1991 are uncommon and were probably only used on base model, light-duty regular cab vehicles. Dana does not list a 44 for F-250's after 1988, but Ford parts books do show a 3850# Dana 44IFS for regular cab F-250s as late as 1996.|
|Right Differential Output Shaft: The major difference between 1980-1983.5 and 1983.5-1997 Ford Dana 44IFS front axles is the way the right differential output shaft is supported and retained. The early axles use a pressed-on taper roller bearing and an external bolt-on retaining flange. Later production axles use a straight roller bearing pressed into the differential housing and the axle shaft is retained by a snap ring inside the differential next to the differential side gear. The early right diff output shafts could be pulled without removing the differential housing from the axle beam with a special slide hammer puller attachment, but seal replacement also requires the bearing be replaced. For later axles, you MUST remove the differential housing from the axle beam to access the snap ring, but once it is out replacing the right seal is quick and easy.|
|Hub Size: Ford used both Dana 44 and Dana 50 IFS Twin Traction Beam® Front Axles in F-250 trucks. The easiest way to tell them apart is by measuring the diameter of the wheel hub or locking hub. Dana 44 axles have hubs that are approximately 3-3/8" in diameter. Dana 50 Hubs are about 4-1/8" in diameter.|

|QU50097 Axle Beam Pivot Bushing fits either left or right axle beams. One of these Bushings gets pressed into the inboard end of each axle beam.|
|Although all Ford Dana 44IFS axle shafts take the same u-joints, the inner and outer axle shafts have different lengths for Bronco/F150 and F250 models. There are also 2 possible outer axle shafts for Bronco and F150 for the 1987 to early 1990 model years. The 1987-1989 (and perhaps early 1990) Bronco and F150 4x4s with flat "pancake" hubs use an outer axle shaft that is almost 1-1/2" shorter than the type used on all Bronco/F150 models with internally splined front wheel hubs.||Link to Our Ford Web Page Index|

|Axle Shaft Seals and Seal Kits|
|Ford introduced a redesigned Dana 44IFS Twin Traction Beam Front Axle during the 1983 model year that uses a right Differential Output Shaft retained by a C-Clip inside the axle housing. The new design requires the Differential Housing be removed from the left axle beam to service the Right Axle Shaft Seal and/or center axle universal joint. Also introduced was a right Axle Slip Joint protected by a flexible rubber Boot instead of a pressed on Yoke Seal. The Slip Yoke Boot eliminated one of the chronic problems the previous 1980-early 1983 axle had, namely axle shaft spline failure from water and grit infiltrating past the seal.||Link to Our Ford Web Page Index|

Both are good, reliable products, but different manufacturing techniques and seal types will have a major influence on the ultimate life of the joint. Our most popular choice is our TK40712 cold-forged, non-greaseable, original equipment replacement U-Joint. The wear-resistant cold-forged cross and superior sealing make it the best choice for both low maintenance and long life. QU90007 is hot-forged and is equipped with single lip seals. It is greaseable through a flush fitting threaded into one of the caps. |Differential and Pinion Bearings (Individual)|
|All 1984 to 1996 Ford Broncos and F-150/F-250 4x4 trucks with Dana 44 Independent Front Suspension Twin Traction Beam® Front Axles use the same differential and outer pinion bearings. The Inner Pinion Bearings changed during the 1992 model year, so if you have a 1992 model, you must verify which Inner Pinion Bearing and Cup your axle has.
All bearings are not created equal for fit or durability, so we only stock first class, long lasting, Timken® Differential and Pinion Bearings for your Dana front axle. Timken® was and is a a major original equipment supplier of top-notch bearing components to Dana Spicer. Since I first started rebuilding Dana axles in the mid 1970's, I have found Timken® Bearings to be the most consistent in relation to the published dimensions of any bearing on the market which makes rebuilding an axle right the first time a WHOLE lot easier!

|1984-1986 and 1989-1996 Ford Bronco and F150 Dana 44IFS axles all have internally splined front wheel hubs. 1987 and most 1988 Bronco and F150 models have a thin, unsplined wheel hub that requires a special flanged9(Top-Hat) type hub-lock assembly. All the Dana 44IFS equipped F250 trucks have internally splined wheel hubs.|

|For F250, 1983.5-1986 and 1989-1994 F150/Bronco all use the same wheel seal and outer wheel bearing part numbers. 1987-1988.5 Bronco and F150 with manual hubs have a unique wheel bearing/seal setup. Almost all 1995-1996 Ford F150 and Broncos use a different wheel seal. The seal change was necessary to provide clearance for the ABS Brake Tone Ring. However, My Ford parts books do list 1995, 1996 U150 (Bronco) with a 3.07 gear ratio and manual hubs that does use QU90007 seal. I never saw one and Dana does not show a Bill of Material list for this axle, but presumably Ford did build some 1995-1996 Broncos with the older wheel hub/seal design for fleet use or no-frills buyers.|
