We stock a complete line of original equipment replacement parts for the 1999-2010 Ford New Process/New Venture NV273F Transfer Case. Introduced as the optional Transfer Case for the 1999 Ford Super Duty® F-250, F-350, F450, F550 4x4 trucks and as the base Transfer Case for 2000 Excursions, the NV273F Electric Shift Transfer Case was used used through the 2010 model year. The NV273F is a fairly reliable unit that under went a number of design modifications during it's production life. The NV273F is a electric, shift, chain drive transfer case with synchronized 4x4 high range, 2.72:1 planetary driven 4x4 low range, and aluminum case castings. It was built at the New Process plant in East Syracuse New York.
The Ford version of the New Venture NV273 transfer case shares a number of common components with the Dodge NV273D transfer case, but the Ford and Dodge versions are not interchangeable (continued below)

The electric shift transfer case option for all Ford Excursion and 1999-2010 Ford Super Duty® F-250, F-350, F450, F550 4x4 trucks is a NV273F. When Ford first started using the NV273F, it was built at the Chyrsler owned New Process Gear Plant (NPG) in East Syracuse, New York which was then operated by New Venture Gear (NVG) a joint venture controlled by Chyrsler and General Motors. (The model designation NV273F was shorthand for New Venture 273 Ford.) The case castings usually had the New Venture Logo, but the assembly tag had the New Process Name. When NVG dissolved a short time later, Chyrsler continued building the NV273F for Ford at the New Process factory. After a couple of years, Chyrsler sold the New Process production rights to Canada's Magna Corporation. Under Magna, NV273F transfer cases were still built at the NPG plant through the end of the 2010 model year. In 2010-2011 Magna phased out the Syracuse NPG factory and moved transfer case production to Mexico so new replacement assemblies are now imported. The important thing to know is despite all these name changes and plant relocations, most of the parts in a NV273F are pretty much the same from 1999-2010. | Link to our Ford Web Page Index | ||
| For parts identification purposes, a Round Tag is affixed to the back of the rear case. Stamped on the tag are the Model Number (NV273F), Assembly Number (10 to 11 character alpha-numeric number code), Transfer Case Build Date, and Low Range Ratio (2.72). In most cases, parts identification is pretty straight forward with the year and assembly number, but there are times we may need additional information such as the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), engine, transmission, transfer case build date, or truck model. Transfer Cases built in the U.S. have the NPG Logo and the legend New Process Gear Syracuse, New York in red plus wording to identify what each number signifies. The Mexican built replacement cases have a Tag with the stamped numbers but no other identification. | ||||
| There is also a factory applied Decal usually located on back of the rear case. The Decal has a Bar Code, serial number, Dodge assembly part number, and New Process assembly part number. As often as not, the Decal is long gone or illegible by the time the transfer case needs service, but if the Round Tag is missing, look for this decal. | ||||

The major cause of broken Transfer Case castings is accidents. A good front end hit can push the driveshaft backwards breaking one or both case halves. Other common causes are running the transfer case out of oil, rock hits/high centering, excessive driveshaft angles (from Lift kits), and operating a case with a badly worn chain. Depending upon the year and transmission, Ford New Venture NV273F electric shift transfer cases will have one of three Input Shaft choices. 31 Spline input shafts were used for 1999-2004 models plus 2005 Excursion with automatic transmissions or 1999-2002 models 5 speed manual transmissions. A 24 spline input will be found on 1999-2001 transfer cases in V10 or Diesel trucks with 6 speed manual transmissions. For the 2002 model year, the 24 spline 6 speed input shaft was replaced by a 34 spline input shaft which was also be used for V10 or Diesel trucks with 5 and 6 speed automatic transmissions all the way through 2010. As far as I have seen, the NV273F Transfer Cases in 2005 to 2010 Super Duty trucks built for the North American market using the 5.4L gas V8 engine will also have the 34 spline Input Shaft. | Link to our Ford Web Page Index | ||

1999-2010 Ford New Process and New Venture NV273F Transfer Cases all use the same Oil Pump. Your NV271F Manual Shift Transfer Case will have one of two types of interchangeable Oil Pickup Assemblies. Factory assembled, early production models will have a five piece pickup assembly. Later model cases have a one piece, unitized assembly. The diameter of the NV273F Rear Output Shaft is considerably larger than any previous Rear Output Shaft used on Ford 4x4 Transfer Cases. The Output Shafts are both use fixed type round flanges. Front output shafts were built in an early and late version. While they are interchangeable if you also replace the sprocket snap ring, I feel the 1999-2004 Front Output Shaft is preferred for competition or really heavy-duty use, due to the full length spline and the early Sprocket Snap Ring is significantly thicker than the one used with the later shaft. | Link to our Ford Web Page Index | ||

The non-rebuildable Planetary Assembly has 6 needle bearing supported pinion gears that are driven by the input shaft to provide low range gearing for the NV273F Transfer Case. In most cases, the Planetary Assembly will never need replacement, but the 34 small needle bearings under each pinion gear and the pinion gear teeth themselves are prone to damage from from lack of lubrication/dirty oil and from metal chips that may occur under high wear situations. The two Planetary Thrust Washers and the Snap Ring should be replaced any time you perform major transfer case service. The Planetary Annulus Gear, which is the big gear pressed in the front case into which the Planetary Assembly fits, is only sold as part of the Front Case Half. | Link to our Ford Web Page Index | ||

The NV271F Transfer Case uses both conventional Seals and O-Rings to keep oil in and water out. To disassemble the NV271F Front Case, both the Input Seal and Front Output Seal must be destroyed while removing them in order to access the Input and Front Output Shaft Snap Rings. The Output Seals were changed for the 2008 model year. Overall, the NV273D electric shift system is far more reliable than 1980s and 1990s era electric shift transfer cases, but shift malfunctions are not uncommon and the labor time it takes to troubleshoot the problem often exceeds the cost of the defective part itself which can be with any of the shift control parts from the dash switch to the motor. | Link to our Ford Web Page Index |

Of all the parts on NV273F electric shift Transfer Cases, the Range Fork Shift Fork Pads are the most common components to require replacement especially on 1999-2001 models due to the load put on them by the spring loaded Range Fork during shifting. Worn out Pads will allow damaging metal to metal contact between the shift forks and sliding clutches so your Shift Fork Pads should be replaced any time you are performing internal transfer case service. due to the many brand specific features of each model. The NV273F along with the manual shift NV273F were the available transfer cases in 1999-2010 Ford Super Duty® 4x4s replacing Borg Warner 1356 and 4407 Transfer Cases used in the previous F-250 and F-350 models.
NV273F Transfer Cases are direct mount assemblies that bolt to the back of either automatic or manual transmissions. The Input Shafts have female splines. Both output shafts have fixed round flanges. The front flange mates to a Double Cardan Constant Velocity driveshaft. The Rear Driveshaft can be either a CV or conventional Single Cardan unit.
For parts identification purposes, a Round Tag is affixed to the back of the rear case and a Decal is usually located on oil channel cast in the back of the rear case. Stamped on the tag are the Model Number (NV271D), Assembly Number (8 digit number plus two letters), Transfer Case Build Date, and Low Range Ratio (2.72). In most cases, parts identification is pretty straight forward with the year and assembly number, but there are times we may need additional information such as the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), engine, transmission model, transfer case build date, or truck model.
