Ford Excursion and Super Duty® trucks have a number of rear driveshaft configurations depending upon year, truck model, engine, transmission, and wheel base. To insure you order the correct replacement parts, YOU must verify the parts your driveshaft has using the Driveshaft Identification section below.
Ford introduced the first factory equipped 4x4 Super Duty® trucks in (continued below......)
| Driveshaft Identification | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|
![]() |
Ford used a great variety of rear drive shaft configurations for the 4x4 Excursion and 1999-2004 Super Duty® trucks. Before ordering rear driveshaft parts for your 4x4, you have to identify the part types used on your driveshaft. Ford used both Double Cardan* Constant Velocity and Single Cardan* rear driveshafts. Three different u-joints sizes are possible along with different sizes and types of slip joints. All the 4x4 Rear Driveshafts use steel tubing. Although many of the parts we list on this page will fit 4x2 trucks with steel driveshafts, we are unable to give specific 4x2 fitment information as 4x2 trucks are exceedingly rare around our mile high Montana headquarters. We do not offer parts for those 4x2 trucks with aluminum driveshafts. *Cardan is a tech term used to describe the common cross type universal joint. |

Shaft Type, Single or Double Cardan: Excursion and Most Ford Super Duty® 4x4 Rear Driveshafts use a Single Cardan u-joint at the upper, transfer case end of the driveshaft. Most 137" and 142" wheel base F-250 and F-350 trucks have a Double-Cardan Constant Velocity Joint at the Transfer Case End. | |||

1 Piece or 2 Piece Driveshaft: These terms are a bit misleading as obviously driveshafts have more that one or two pieces, but of course they refer to the number of shaft assemblies or subassemblies used to construct the entire driveshaft. One piece driveshafts, which are used in shorter wheelbase models, have a single tube with a slip joint at one end and either a single or double Cardan Joint at the other end. Two Piece driveshafts are found in longer wheel base trucks and they will comprise of two sub-assemblies joined at the middle by a single Cardan u-joint. A two piece shaft will have a total 3 single Cardan u-joints and utilize a center bearing (midship support) at the stub shaft welded to the rear of the first tube. | |||
![]() Click Here To Enlarge |
Rear U-Joint to Axle Attachment: Depending upon the drivetrain configuration, the rear universal joint may have a flange yoke that bolts to a matching pinion companion flange OR a u-joint that directly attaches to a pinion end yoke with straps and bolts. | |||
![]() Click Here To Enlarge |
U-Joint Sizes: Ford used three different size universal joints depending upon the driveshaft type, vehicle model, wheel base, and engine. The Small size universal joint has 1-3/16" diameter cups and is 3-5/8" wide. The small u-joint was used in some vehicles with 5.4 liter engines and all Double Cardan CV joints. The Medium size u-joint also has 1-3/16" cups, but the width is 4-3/16". This joint was used at the rear axle on Double Cardan CV shafts and for all positions on Single-Cardan shaft equipped F-250-350 Diesel and V-10 trucks, plus many 5.4L Excursions and Super Dutys. The Large size u-joint which was used exclusively in F-450 and F-550 trucks features 1-3/8" diameter cups and 4-3/16" overall width. | |||

Slip Yoke Boot: Depending upon the size of the slip joint splines, Ford Excursion and 1999-2004 Super Duty® Rear Driveshafts will have 3 pleat, 4 pleat, or 5 pleat slip joint boots. The boots and clamps for 3 pleat boots are not interchangeable with 4 or 5 pleat types. | |||
![]() Click Here to Enlarge |
Midship Coupling and Center Bearing: Ford used 2 types of midship couplings on longer wheel base Super Duty trucks with 2 piece driveshafts. With the Slip Coupling type, a female slip yoke on the forward end of rearward driveshaft fits over the long male spline slip stub that is part of the forward driveshaft. With a Fixed Coupling, both parts of the Slip Joint and the center universal joint are part of the rearward shaft. The back of the forward shaft has a fixed, half-round end yoke to which the center u-joint is secured using straps and bolts. In either case, the Center Bearing Assembly is the same, however some service procedures to replace the Bearing will differ. | |||

| Boots and Boot Clamps | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|
![]() |
Ford Excursion and 1999-2004 Ford Super Duty® 4x4 trucks have a rear driveshaft slip joint protected by a rubber boot. A boot protected driveshaft slip joint will usually outlast the truck as as long as the boot is intact and there is some grease on the splines. If your Boot is damaged, REPLACE IT! If your Boot is OK, but you are doing other driveshaft service, always clean and grease the splines AND replace the clamps! | |||

| Center Bearings | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|
![]() |
The maximum length a steel tube driveshaft can run without support is about 5'. For most 4x2 and longer wheel base 4x4 trucks, this means a two part rear driveshaft (Propeller Shaft) with a pressed on Center Bearing (also known as Midship Support Bearing or Carrier Bearing) must be used to support the center of the driveshaft. | |||

| Double-Cardan Constant Velocity Parts | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|
![]() |
Some Shorter Wheel Base Ford Super Duty® trucks used a Double Cardan Rear Constant Velocity Driveshaft. The CV Joint is at the front of the driveshaft. Although the slip joint and rear u-joint are often identical to those used on some trucks with conventional driveshafts with the same engine, NONE of the CV specific parts are interchangeable with any of the parts used on regular driveshafts. | |||

| Flange Yokes, Single Cardan | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|
![]() |
Single Cardan Flange Yokes are used at one or both ends of most Ford Excursion and Ford Super Duty® rear driveshafts. A flange yoke is part of the driveshaft assembly. To order a replacement Flange Yoke, you need to know the size of your u-joint AND verify if the Pilot Diameter of the Flange Yoke you require. On most, BUT NOT ALL driveshafts, the Front Flange Yoke (Transfer Case) and Rear Flange Yoke (axle) are different. A female pilot hole in the Flange Yoke will mate up to a matching male pilot on the transfer case or axle companion flange. Order four QU20103 Bolts to secure your new Flange Yoke to the matching companion flange. | |||

Most CV and universal joint service is done using makeshift tools and hammering on the parts until something gives service methods. Driveshaft parts and universal joints are incredibly precise components that can be easily damaged by such slam-bang work. There is a better way to perform driveshaft service using application specific press tooling and approved service procedures. Yeah, I know the Manuals and Tools are expensive, but when you consider that a poorly installed front u-joint blowing out as you tool down the Interstate at 75 is going to cause an expensive and dangerous mess. I have witnessed several driveshaft failures in vehicles driving ahead of me during my travels and I can tell you a 3' long front driveshaft can do a heck of a lot of damage as it whips around jamming into the road, whacking the transmission, and smashing the floor! | Link to Vehicle Make or Category Links |

| Tubing | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|
![]() |
Ford used 3.5" outside diameter alloy driveshaft tubing with welded seams for almost all Ford Excursion and 1999-2004 Ford Super Duty Rear Driveshafts. Driveshaft tubing is typically more concentric, straighter, and has a higher Rockwell hardness rating when compared to general purpose tubing. A driveshaft needs to be retubed any time the tube is bent, dinged, or creased. Retubing a driveshaft is best done by a qualified driveline shop that can balance the finished assembly, however any competent machinist with a long bed lathe can successfully retube a driveshaft. See TM3000 Driveshaft Manual or TSB3510 download for driveshaft assembly runout specifications. | |||

Tube Yokes typically get damaged when a worn u-joint lets go under load or from getting tweaked using excessive force when replacing universal joints. Replacing Tube Yokes is best done by a qualified driveline shop that can balance the finished assembly, however any competent machinist with a long bed lathe can successfully replace tube yokes. Ford used different size rear driveshaft universal joints depending upon the year, engine, transmission, and truck model. Verify your tube diameter and u-joint size before ordering!
