Front Constant Velocity Driveshaft Parts for 1970 to 1979 Ford Bronco and F-Series 4x4s
We have a good selection of parts for 1970 to 1979 Ford front constant velocity driveshafts. Ford first used a Spicer Type Double Cardan front CV driveshaft in Broncos built after 1970 serial number G70,000. The 1974 F-Series pickups with New Process NP203 full time transfer cases were the original F-Series models with a front CV shaft. Subsequently, all 1974-1979 F-Series trucks with the NP203 full time case would be built with a front CV driveshaft. The 1977-1/2 F-250 ("Low Boy") was the first F-Series model with a New Process NP205 part time transfer cases that came equipped with a front CV driveshaft. For some reason, only some 1978-1979 F-150 NP205 equipped trucks were made with front CV driveshafts, the rest will have a conventional two joint front driveshaft. For Ford front 4x4 CV driveshafts, 1979 was significant for two reasons: The CV joint size was enlarged and the new F-350 1 ton 4x4 came equipped with a front CV driveshaft for all power train combinations. Greaseable Front CV driveshafts were discontinued by Ford starting with the 1980 model year.
Driveshaft Identification
Ford used Double Cardan Constant Velocity Joints in 1966 Broncos. Until 1970 Bronco serial number G70000, the front CV shafts used were Borg Warner units with a Mechanics style CV joint. The u-joints used on these early shafts were retained by C-Clips that fit against the inside of the yoke ears. By now, most of those early Borg Warner CV shafts have been replaced by Spicer type CV shafts with external snap ring u-joints. From 1970 serial number G70001 through the end of the 1979 model year, all Ford 4x4 CV shafts were built by Spicer. At this time we only supply pats for the Spicer type shafts.  
External Snap Rings: Spicer type CV Joints have u-joints that are retained by external snap rings.

  Ford used only two different Spicer type external snap ring universal joint sizes in 1970-1979 era Bronco and F-Series factory Front CV Driveshafts. However for 1977 and 1978, plus one 1979 Bronco shaft, many front Ford CV shafts had both sizes of u-joints on the same shaft!  
Spicer 1310 Series 1970-1978 (Rare 1979): The only size u-joint used for both ends of Bronco, F100, F150, and F250 front CV shafts through 1976. Cup diameter is 1-1/16". Overall width of installed u-joint is 3-7/32"  

Spicer 1330 Series 1977-1979: An equal length cross universal joint first used on 1977.5 F250 Ford front driveshafts at the front axle. Used for both ends of almost all front CV driveshafts in 1979. Cup diameter is 1-1/16". Installed width is 3-5/8".

 
Spicer 1330F Series (Not Stock for 1970-1979 Ford FRONT CV Driveshaft): This is an equal length cross universal joint with two different cup diameters that was not used for FRONT CV driveshafts by Ford through 1979. For front axle applications, this u-joint was ONLY used the axle end on some 1979 model year single cardan (NO CV Joint) driveshafts. If you have a 1979 Ford 4x4 that may not have the original front axle or driveshaft, check the cup diameter required for your front axle yoke. 1330F u-joints use 1-1/8" diameter, thick wall cups for rear axle yoke, but the cups that fit the driveshaft yokes are standard 1330 1-1/16" diameter parts. Installed width is 3-5/8".  
Slip Joints: To order a replacement Slip Yoke Determine the u-joint series and measure the distance from the center of the u-joint hole to the end of the yoke splines. Also verify the spline outside diameter, number of splines, and spline length on the matching Slip Stub (most will be 1-3/8"-16 spline with 2-1/4" spline length). Replacement Slip Stubs are also available, but in addition to the the spline outside diameter, number of splines, and spline length, you need to know the driveshaft tube diameter and wall thickness.  
Constant Velocity Parts for 1970-1978 Ford 1310 Series CV Joints
All 1970 to 1978 Ford 4x4s with Spicer Type Factory Front Double Cardan Constant Velocity Driveshafts use universal joints made to Spicer 1310 series specifications. Pinion Yokes
All 1959-1979 Ford F-Series front axles were made by Dana Spicer. Both Dana 44 and Dana 60 axles were used depending upon the year and model.

Slip Stubs
The most common reason Slip Stubs wear out is inadequate or contaminated lubricant. Late production slip stub splines were coated with Glidecote plastic coating to extend spline life, but any slip joint that has been run dry will quickly wear and lead to vibration and/or clunks. Replacing splined Slip Stubs is best done by a qualified driveline shop that can balance the finished assembly, however any competent machinist with a long bed lathe can successfully replace a spined stub. Ford used three diameters of driveshaft tubing for 1959-1979 front CV driveshafts depending upon the year, engine, transmission, and wheelbase. Slip Yokes
Slip Yoke spline wear and damaged yoke ears are the two usual reason to replace your slip yoke. The yoke ears can get wrecked when a worn u-joint lets go under load or from getting tweaked using excessive force when replacing universal joints. Spline wear is usually caused by inadequate or contaminated lubricant. All the Slip Yokes we offer for 1970-1979 Ford 4x4 front driveshafts are made to fit 1-3/8" x 16 spline slip stubs. Small Parts

Tools
Most driveshaft and universal joint service is done using makeshift tools and hammer on the parts until something gives service methods. Driveshaft parts and universal joints are incredibly precise components that can be easily damaged by such slam-bang work. There is a better way to perform driveshaft service using application specific press tooling and approved service procedures. Yeah, I know the Manuals and Tools are expensive, but not when you consider the expensive and dangerous mess you will be in if a poorly installed u-joint blows out as you tool down the Interstate at 75 mph! I have witnessed several driveshaft failures in vehicles driving ahead of me during my travels and I can tell you a 5' long rear driveshaft can do a heck of a lot of damage as it whips around! QT4008 Medium Size U-Joint Separator Yoke is used with a QT1065 series C-frame Press and QT4016 Press Anvil to easily remove the 3 universal joints on most standard driveshafts and Double-Cardan Constant Velocity driveshafts. By placing the press force against the u-joint cross, the amount of pressure needed to break a cup free is halved and the chances of damaging the yokes is greatly reduced. Tubing
1970-1979 Ford front CVdriveshafts used steel driveshaft tubing in 2" x 0.120", 2-1/2" x 0.065", 2-1/2" x 0.083",and 3 x 0.083"" sizes. We stock a few common sizes of driveshaft tubing which is available by the inch, plus with a short lead time, we can supply most non-stock sizes of driveshaft tubing in 6' lengths. Driveshaft tubing is typically more concentric, straighter, and has a higher Rockwell hardness rating when compared to general purpose tubing. A driveshaft needs to be retubed any time the tube is bent, dinged, or creased. Retubing a driveshaft is best done by a qualified driveline shop that can balance the finished assembly, however any competent machinist with a long bed lathe can successfully retube a driveshaft. Universal Joints, Greaseable
Our USA made Greaseable U-Joints have flexible rubber seals to purge excess grease and are similar in construction and load ratings to your original factory u-joints. Always verify the dimensions of each of your old u-joints before ordering replacements as some shafts use different u-joints at each end. Service intervals for greaseable universal joints will vary with your driving conditions and type of grease you use, but as a minimum, you should grease your u-joints with QU90018 Pyroplex® Plus Synthetic Grease or other quality, water resistant NLGI #2 GC-LB grease at every oil change or every three months which ever comes sooner. Lube more frequently in extremely wet conditions or after submersion under water. QU40903 1330F Series Universal Joint (Conversion Applications) is an alloy steel, greaseable hot-forged universal joint with two different cup diameters that may be found in Ford 4x4s that have had the front axle or axle pinion yoke replaced with a 1330F series part. Cup diameters are 1-1/16" for the driveshaft and 1-1/8" for the front axle yoke. Installed width is 3-5/8". This part was not used in any 1970 to 1979 STOCK FRONT CV driveshaft, but may be found in vehicles that have been modified.
