We have a good selection of service parts in stock for the American Axle Manufacturing (AAM) or General Motors 10.5" Ring Gear, 14 Bolt Full Floating Rear Axle which can be found in Chevy and GMC 3/4 ton and 1 ton vehicles from 1973 to current. The basic axle design has not changed much since the 1973 model year, however several engineering changes have taken place, the most significant being a larger inner pinion bearing in 1988, pinion seal change for 1998, a switch to an oil bath oil rear wheel seal starting in 2001, and larger wheel bearings for C/K models for 2011. In 1994, General Motors sold it's axle division to a group of investors who renamed their new acquisition American Axle Manufacturing (AAM). The AAM 14 Bolt, 10-1/2" Ring Gear full floater rear axle is what used to be called the GM corporate 14 Bolt, 10-1/2" Ring Gear full float rear axle.

Differential and Pinion Bearings (Individual)
All 1973-current AAM/GM 14 Bolt, 10-1/2" full floating rear axles use the same Pinion Nose, Outer Pinion and Differential Bearings. The Inner Pinion Bearing and Cup you need will depend upon the year of your axle. We offer Timken bearings as they are unmatched by any other brand of bearing I have used rebuilding axles over the past 35+ years in the business. When you are a shade tree mechanic dealing with a diff and pinion rebearing job without all the fancy gauging tools we have, you always want your new bearings to be the same overall thickness as the original bearings were when the axle was built so your pinion depth, pinion preload and backlash are within the tolerance limits when you are done with the job. Timken bearings will almost always deliver that type of accuracy, plus the steel quality and surface finish is the world's best.

Differential Bearing and Seal Kits
With durable, torque rich Diesel and high powered gas fuel injected engines, vehicle mileage life expectancy is two to three times as great as it was with carbureted engines so an axle rebearing job is now a preventive maintenance service that should usually be performed on trucks with 125,000 to 175,000 miles on the odometer to prevent catastrophic bearing related failures. Gaskets and Gasket Maker
The AAM or GM 14 Bolt full floating rear axle is unusual in that to this day it still uses gaskets for the differential cover. There are three axle shaft gasket options depending upon the year of your axle. Always replace an axle shaft gasket anytime an axle shaft is removed. Pinion Seals, Pinion Hardware, and Pinion Yokes
General Motors used a number of different Pinion Yokes for 14 Bolt Full Float Rear Axles Rear Axles depending on the year and engine. To order replacement yokes, u-joints, or hardware, you need to know the u-joint series. Various u-joint sizes are:
1310 Series: 1.0625" cups, 3-7/32" outside lock-up: TK40720 or QU40769 U-Joints
1350 Series: 1.1875" cups, 3-5/8" outside lock-up: TK40719 or QU40731 U-Joints
1410 Series: 1.1875" cups, 4-3/16" external lock-up: TK40705 or QU40789 U-Joints

Spindle Nuts and Spindle Nut Hardware
Early GM 10-1/2" Full Float Rear Axles used a Four Piece Double Nut/Double Washer setup for wheel bearing adjustment and retention. This was used on all 1974-1979 axles, most 1980 and some 1981 axles. (The four piece nut set may have still been used on some later 1980's axles for limited applications) Starting in 1980, a single Spindle Nut held in place by a solid Key and Retainer Ring appeared on some models and was phased in for all axles over the next year or two. Wheel Hubs and Parts
Over the years, GM has used three different axle shaft flange gaskets and a number of different drum and disc brake wheel hubs. Wheel Hubs have never been a big seller because they generally last for the life of the truck unless you toast your wheel bearings. Axle shaft gaskets are a nonreusable item that must be replaces any time an axle shaft is removed.
