Parts for Closed Knuckle Standard Dana 44 Front Axles in 1960-1969 Chevy & GMC 4x4 Trucks

GM used 2 types of Dana 44 closed knuckle front axles. Standard duty Dana 44 axles with 8 bolt Ball Seals were used on 1960-1969 1/2 ton and light 3/4 ton models. Heavy-Duty Dana 44 front axles with 12 bolt Ball Seals were only used on 1962-1969 heavier GVW 3/4 ton trucks.

Axle Identification
  All 1960-1969 Chevy and GMC factory 4x4s used a Dana 44 front axle. The standard axle was a Dana 44 with 8 Bolt Knuckle Ball Seals. Starting in 1962, 3/4 ton trucks could be ordered with an optional Dana 44 Heavy Duty front axle with 12 Bolt Ball Seals.

Axle Shafts
General Motors used the same length axle shafts for all 1960 to 1969 standard duty Dana 44 closed knuckle front axles in Chevy or GMC 1/2 ton K10, K15, K1500, and 3/4 ton K20, K25, K2500 4x4 trucks. All 1/2 ton axles use these axle shafts. For 3/4 ton models, our axle shafts fit standard Dana 44 axles which use QU40188 8 bolt knuckle ball seals. They will not fit the optional, rare Dana 44HD 3/4 ton axles which can be easily identified by the 12 bolt knuckle ball seal (QU40189). By today's standards, the axle u-joints used in these shafts are way undersized, but given the lighter vehicle weights and modestly powered engines of the 1960's, the joint size was probably adequate.

  QU40671 Right Inner Axle Shaft for 1960-1969 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton Chevy and GMC 4x4 Trucks with standard Dana 44 standard duty closed knuckle front axles is a New Old Stock (NOS), genuine Dana Spicer 30 spline inner axle shaft. Length from center of u-joint hole to end is 18".
     
Axle Shaft Seals and Seal Kits for Inner Axle Shafts
1960-1969 GM Dana 44 closed knuckle front axles originally used a two piece Inner Axle Shaft Oil Seal that was installed next to a stamped steel axle shaft guide. Later axles were built with unitized seals that combine the axle shaft guide and axle shaft seal in one part. Dimensionally, the two types are interchangeable and by the early 1970's, all Dana 44 front axles were built with the one piece seal that combines the Seal and Guide into a single unit. I always replace the two piece Seal with the one piece as I believe it has greater sealing ability plus longer life. With a closed knuckle axle, seal seepage from the differential often goes unnoticed until the a catastrophic ring and pinion failure occurs because the errant lube ends up in the knuckle ball. These Seals are tricky to install so I recommend you also order our optional installation tooling. Axle disassembly including differential removal is required to replace the Seals.  
  QU42015 OE Type Inner Axle Shaft Seal is a narrow seal that requires you reuse your original stamped metal axle shaft guide. We still carry these seals for the vehicle owner that wishes to restore their vintage 4x4 with original type seals.
QU40055 GM Dana 44 Unitized Inner Axle Shaft Oil Seal with integral axle shaft guide for 1960-1969 Chevy and GMC 4x4 Dana 44 closed knuckle front axles. QU40055 replaces the original stamped steel guide/QU42015 seal combo. One of these are installed in each axle tube, right next to the differential to keep differential gear lube from leaking into the closed knuckle balls. QK4872 GM Dana 44 Axle Seal Kit with Adjustable Depth Axle Seal Tool Set Quickly and easily installs QU40055 Inner Axle Seals in 1960-1969 Chevy and GMC 4x4 Dana 44 closed knuckle front axles. QT1165 Installer tool does not have a depth stop so you can offset the seal to clear a worn spot in the axle shaft, however, for a reference point, you will need to check the depth of the old seals before removing them. Axle Universal Joints
The Closed Knuckle GM Dana 44 axle uses solid cross, inside lock-up universal joints without seals that are designed to be bathed in a semi-liquid lubricant from inside the closed knuckle balls. By today's standards, these u-joints are way undersized, but given the lighter vehicle weights and modestly powered engines of the 1960's, the joint size was probably adequate. Closed Knuckle Parts
We stock the regular service closed knuckle parts for your 1960-1969 Chevy or GMC 1/2 ton or light duty 3/4 ton 4x4 with a standard closed knuckle Dana 44 front axle which will have 8 bolt Knuckle Ball Hemisphere Seals. With a Closed Knuckle axle, the axle universal joints and king pin bearings are lubricated by very heavy oil or a viscous grease that will flow when the axle shafts rotate. A large multi-piece seal is bolted to the backside of the steering knuckle to keep lubricant in and water out. On poorly maintained closed knuckle axles or axles equipped with lockout hubs that are rarely used in 4x4, the upper king pin bearing and axle universal joint can suffer from lack of lubrication. The Ball Seals will usually weep some lubricant especially when standard gear oils are used as a lubricant. Submersion of the axle under water or condensation from temperature changes can cause moisture to build up inside the enclosed ball and lead to corrosion damage and part failures. Differential and Pinion Bearings (Individual)
There was a GM Dana 44 differential Side Bearing change which depending upon what parts book you believe was effective in 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, or 1968. My Chevy Parts Book shows 1964 models with the new bearing, but if you have a GM Dana 44 closed knuckle axle of any year, you should verify what diff side bearing you have before ordering.
All bearings are not created equal for fit or durability, so we only stock first class, long lasting, Timken® Differential and Pinion Bearings for your Dana front axle. Timken® was and is a a major original equipment supplier of top-notch bearing components to Dana Spicer. Since I first started rebuilding Dana axles in the mid 1970's, I have found Timken® Bearings to be the most consistent in relation to the published dimensions of any bearing on the market which makes rebuilding an axle right the first time a WHOLE lot easier!

Differential Parts
Most 1960-1969 Chevy and GMC closed knuckle Dana 44 Front Axles were factory equipped with conventional open differentials. An optional Powr-Lok® clutch type limited slip differential was also available. With the open differentials, internal wear is not a huge problem, but wear on the thrust washers and cross shaft can be expected on higher mileage vehicles. The differential small parts are the same for all ratios, but the ring gear flange on the case castings are different for 3.73 and numerically lower ratios and axles having 4.09 and numerically higher ratios due to the pinion gear diameter size for high and low ratios. Gaskets and Gasket Makers
The factory Spicer Lockout Hubs use two gaskets per hub. Early and mid production vehicles having hubs with metal dials use 2 QU40395 metal gaskets. Very late production trucks with plastic dial hubs use 1 QU40395 Metal Gasket between the splined hub body and wheel hub and 1 TK40573 Fiber Gasket between the splined hub body and outer chrome cap. The original Dana 44 differential covers are stamped from thin gauge material with embossed flanges which were made for use with a cut gasket. If you desire, you can combine a gasket with a very thin film of RTV on each side, but using RTV sealant without a gasket is NOT recommended. Hubs and Hub Parts
The wheel hub used on GM 1/2 ton 4x4s with Dana 44 closed knuckle front axles has a unique internal spline length so the common aftermarket lockout hubs that fit GM open knuckle axles will not fit the GM closed knuckle axles.
