We have a good selection of parts for the 1973 to 1981 GM Dana Spicer Model 44 solid front 4x4 drive axle. The 1973 model year Dana 44 had a number of engineering changes that made it stronger and more reliable than the 1972 axle, The Dana 44 was the sole front drive axle used in by GM from 1973 to 1976 for SUVs, 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton 4x4 vehicles. In 1977 GM started to replace the Dana 44 with the all new corporate, 10 Bolt, 8-1/2" Ring Gear, beam type solid 4x4 front drive axle, however the Dana 44 continued to be used by GM through the 1981 model year after which it was dropped entirely from the GM lineup. For the Dana 44, 1977 also marked a change in hub and spindle design for all models. Although the differential parts are totally different, the 1977 to 1981 GM Dana 44 and the GM 10 Bolt front axles share a lot of common parts from the axle u-joints out to the hubs.

All are good, reliable products, but different manufacturing techniques and seal types will have a major influence on the ultimate life of the joint. Our most popular choice is our TK40712 cold-forged, non-greaseable, original equipment replacement U-Joint. The wear-resistant cold-forged cross and superior sealing make it the best choice for both low maintenance and long life. QU40754 and QU90007 are hot-forged and are equipped with single lip seals. They are greaseable through a flush fitting threaded into one of the caps. With good maintenance and quality lubricant like our Pyroplex® Plus Grease, these joints will last and last. 1973-1981 GM Dana 44 Front Axles use a double spindle nut set with a lockwasher for front wheel bearing adjustment and retention. The Inner Nut has a pin that engages with one of the holes in the lockwasher. The Outer Nut is a jam nut.

The dead spindle design of the 1973-1981 GM Dana 44 front axle uses a needle bearing to support the outer axle shaft. Wheel Bearings and Seals (Individual)

The outer wheel bearings used on all 1973-1981 GM Dana 44 front axles are the same. For the wheel seal and inner wheel bearing, there are choices for 1977 and prior trucks depending upon the year and model of your 4x4. 1977 is the transition year where you could have either early or late bearing types.
