Front Axle Parts and Tools for 1969-1972 Chevy and GMC 4x4 Dana 44 Open Knuckle Front Axles
We have a good selection of parts for 1969 to 1972 Chevy and GMC Dana 44 open knuckle front driving axles. General Motors first used the open knuckle Dana 44 front axle in the 1969 Chevy Blazer. According to the GM Parts Books, the GMC Jimmy, plus Chevy and GMC 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton pickups kept the closed knuckle Dana 44 through the 1969 model year although there may be some late production 1969 vehicles with the open knuckle 44. The open knuckle GM Dana 44 axle has tighter turning radius compared to the previous closed knuckle axle. Disc brakes replaced drum brakes effective with the 1971 model year.

Axle Shaft Seals, Seal Kits, and Slingers for the INNER Axle Shaft
GM used both one piece and two piece Inner Axle Shaft Oil Seals in 1969-1970 Open Knuckle Dana 44 front axles. Dimensionally, the two types are interchangeable. All 1971 and 1972 axles were built with the one piece seal that combines the Seal and Guide into a single unit. I always replace the two piece Seal with the one piece as I believe it has greater sealing ability plus longer life. With a closed knuckle axle, seal seepage from the differential often goes unnoticed until the a catastrophic ring and pinion failure occurs because the errant lube ends up in the knuckle ball. These Seals are tricky to install so I recommend you also order our optional installation tooling. Axle disassembly including differential removal is required to replace the Seals. Axle Universal Joints
General Motors used an small axle universal joint with tiny 1-1/16" diameter u-joint cups for the 1969 to 1972 Dana 44 open knuckle front axles. The physical dimensions of this series of axle joint means is marginal for full size truck applications which is why it was replaced by a medium size axle u-joint with 1-3/16" cups for the 1973 model year. Ball Joints
The 1969-1972 GM Dana 44 Beam Type open knuckle front axle uses replaceable Ball Joints pressed into the steering knuckle. Both Ball Joints are weight bearing. A threaded adjuster that screws into the upper hole of the axle yoke is used to provide preload on the Ball Joints. Dana has modified the seal configuration on the current production parts, but the high quality and basic Ball Joint design has remained unchanged since the early 1970's. Over the years we have found the average Ball Joint life of our non-greaseable, factory Dana Ball Joints to be 7 to 10 years for vehicles used as daily drivers and/or work vehicles.

Brake Parts
All 1971-1972 GM Dana 44 disc brake front axles used the same disc brake pads. The Caliper Support Plate/Brake Shield assemblies will vary by both year and model. For the Caliper Support Plate/Brake Shield assemblies, 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton parts are always different as the 3/4 ton trucks have a larger diameter rotor. All bearings are not created equal for fit or durability, so we only stock first class, long lasting, Timken® Differential and Pinion Bearings for your Dana front axle. Timken® was and is a a major original equipment supplier of top-notch bearing components to Dana Spicer. Since I first started rebuilding Dana axles in the mid 1970's, I have found Timken® Bearings to be the most consistent in relation to the published dimensions of any bearing on the market which makes rebuilding an axle right the first time a WHOLE lot easier!

Differential Bearing and Seal Kits
1969-1972 Chevy Blazers and all 1970-1972 GMC Jimmy and Chevy/GMC 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton 4x4 trucks have open knuckle Dana 44 Front Axles. If your vintage GM 4x4 has over 150,000 miles on it, there is a good chance that significant bearing wear may have occurred on your differential and pinion bearings. When you replace the bearings, do not forget to replace the inner axle shaft oil seals.

Differential Parts
Most 1969-1972 Chevy and GMC open knuckle Dana 44 Front Axles were factory equipped with conventional open differentials. Depending upon the year, optional Powr-Lok® or Trac-Lok® Differential were also available. With the open differentials, internal wear is not a huge problem, but wear on the thrust washers and cross shaft can be expected on higher mileage vehicles. The differential small parts are the same for all ratios, but the ring gear flange on the case castings are different for 3.73 and numerically lower ratios and axles having 4.09 and numerically higher ratios due to the pinion gear diameter size for high and low ratios. Gaskets and Gasket Makers
In the mid 1970's Dana made a differential cover design change to heavy gauge covers with flat mating flanges. Unlike the previous, thin gauge covers with embossed flanges which were made for use with a cut gasket, the new design, thick gauge covers are designed for sealing with RTV. If you desire, you can still use a gasket with the new type cover by combining the gasket with thin films of RTV. We stock both Ultra Gray RTV Sealant and genuine Dana Gaskets. Except for late 1972 production Blazer/Jimmy/K10/K1500 axles which use a rubber V-Seal, all 1969 to 1972 GM Dana 44 axles had a steel case grease seal pressed in the back side of the spindle. Neither seal design is water-tight, so you should clean and regrease your spindle bearings every two to three years or after immersion in water.

QK4734 Front Axle Shaft Spindle Bearing Set fits 1969-1972 Chevy and GMC Dana 44 front open knuckle axles. One bearing is pressed into each spindle to support the outer axle shaft.
QU40232 Early Type Brass Axle Shaft Thrust Washer measure just under 1.875" outside diameter. This thrust washer was used on 1969-1972 Chevy and GMC Dana 44 open knuckle front axles.

Steering Linkage Parts
1970-1972 GM Dana 44 front axles use a short, non-adjustable drag link that couples the steering gear pitman arm to the axle steering arm bolted to the top of the left knuckle. A long, adjustable tie rod attaches to the integral knuckle steering arms. Wheel Bearings and Seals (Individual)
All 1969 to 1972 GM 4x4 SUVs and pickups use the same outer wheel bearings. Inner wheel bearings for 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton models are different. One Wheel Seal number covers all 3/4 ton trucks, but there are two wheel seal possibilities for the 1/2 tons with the change occurring in the 1972 model year. The 1971 and prior Seal is a simple, single lip grease seal that is 1/4" wide. The 1972 Seal is 1/8" wider and it has a spring loaded double lip. The inside and outside diameters of both seals are virtually the same, but hub seal bore depth and offset differences makes it inadvisable to replace early, narrow QU50654 seal with QU50091 late seal except on 1971 models with disc brakes.
