We stock a complete line of parts for the open knuckle, Dana-Spicer Model 60 Front Axle which was first used by GM in the 1 ton Chevy K30 and GMC K35 4x4 trucks for the 1977 model year. The Dana 60 axle has much larger components than the Model 44 or GM 10 bolt front axles used on previous GM 4x4s. The Model 60 as used by GM from 1977 to 1991 has very durable greaseable king pins and disc brakes. The wheel bearings are serviceable and the dead-spindle configuration allows the use of lockout hubs.

Click to enlarge 		All 1984-1991 Dana 60 and 61 Front Axles in GM 1 ton 4x4 trucks had a Bill of Material Number (BOM) stamped on a Build Tag (red arrow) attached to the differential by two of the differential cover bolts (yellow arrows) when the vehicle was shipped from the factory but, unfortunately, these tags are often missing on trucks that had prior differential service. 1977-1983 Axles will usually have the BOM number stamped on the front side of the right axle tube. The BOM number is a 6 digit number beginning with a 6 plus a dash number (ex: 610604-2). They can be used to determine not only the axle model, but also what components the axle was originally built with. We often ask for this number to insure we provide you with the exact parts you need for your truck.

Each different BOM number signifies an engineering part change which may be minor or major and may involve one or more parts. The dash number indicates the axle ratio and, for some years, the front wheel hub style (for single or dual rear wheel models).

  Steering Linkage: 1977-1991 uses a tie rod that attaches to each steering knuckle. Drag link goes from steering gear to cast iron arm bolted to the top of the drivers side steering knuckle.  
  Knuckle Mounting: Greaseable King Pins. Upper uses spring loaded plastic bushing rotating on a tapered King Pin. Lower has taper roller bearing.

Axle Shaft Inner Oil Seals and Axle Shaft Inner Oil Seal Kits
An Inner Axle Seal is pressed in the inboard end of each axle tube, right next to the differential side bearings. These seals contact the inner axle shafts to prevent gear oil from running out of the differential and down the axle tubes. Old age, blown axle u-joints, and/or grit that works it's way into the axle tubes and cuts the seal are the usual causes of failure. A bad Inner Axle Shaft Seal can be detected by oil coming out the end of the axle tubes next to the axle shaft u-joint. Usually when these Seals start to fail, they will seep oil so the leakage may go undetected for quite some time. Many a ring and pinion set has been burned up from axles that lost all their lube when long term seepage was not noticed.

Brake Parts
Brake Splash Shields deflect road splash and grit from the brake rotors. Rust from road salts or corrosive soils is the most common cause for replacement. The shields can also be bent or torn from hitting rocks off road or from accident damage. Another cause of wrecked shields is incorrect service procedures including driving a chisel between the spindle and knuckle during disassembly. We also stock some hard-to-find brake small parts.

Differential & Pinion Timken Original Equipment Quality Individual Bearings
Over the years, Dana has primarily used Timken bearings when building their axles. For long life and dimensional consistency, Timken bearings are unmatched by any other brand of bearing I have used rebuilding axles over the past 30+ years in the business. When you are a shade tree mechanic dealing with a diff and pinion rebearing job without all the fancy gauging tools we have, you always want your new bearings to be the same overall thickness as the original bearings were when the axle was built so your pinion depth, pinion preload and backlash are within the tolerance limits when you are done with the job. Timken bearings will almost always deliver that type of accuracy, plus the steel quality and surface finish is the world's best.

Differentials and Differential Parts
Differential problems with Model 60 front axles are not all that common. But Murphy, of Murphy's Law* really likes busted differentials, so when you hear that loud, heart-stopping, ominous BANG from the front axle as your 4x4 lurches to a grinding stop, you just KNOW it is one big dose of bad news. Hub Assemblies and Hub Parts

General Motors used internally spined wheel hubs for all 1977 to 1991 Dana 60 axles. Solid drive gears or both manual and automatic hub locks were supplied with civilian Dana 60 front axles depending upon the year and transfer case option. 1977-1979 Trucks with NP203 full time transfer cases had solid steel drive gears. 1979 to 1983 (and possibly 1984) models with NP205 part time transfer cases were equipped with Spicer yellow plastic dial manual hubs. The Spicer hubs were replaced by Warn hubs with black plastic dials. Two types of automatic locking hubs were used, but we have no new parts for either the 1982/1983 version or the 1984 and later type. We only stock parts for the Warn Black Plastic Dial manual hub used on factory manual hub equipped 1985 to 1991 K/V series 1 ton 4x4s. Mechanically, this is the same Warn hub as that sold by the aftermarket with a black plastic dial for the 1977-1991 model years (The factory Warn hub may also be found on some 1984 trucks with non-synchronized NP205 transfer cases).

King Pin Kits and King Pin Parts
We stock all the normal replacement parts for Dana 60 King Pin type Front Axles. 1977 to 1991 Chevy or GMC K30, K35, K3500, and V3500 1 ton 4x4 trucks with Dana 60 front axles use greaseable and rebuildable King Pins instead of Ball Joints to mount the steering knuckles to the axle housing. Time has proven the Dana 60 King Pin design to be the most durable front axle steering components ever installed in Class 2 3/4 ton and Class 3 one ton 4x4 trucks. Ring and Pinion Kits
Unless your axle has run out of oil or it is severely abused, you will probably never have to replace your original ring and pinion set. However, if you do need one, we stock original equipment Dana-Spicer Gear Sets for your vintage Chevy/GMC Dana 60 front axle. These genuine gear sets are not cheap when compared to the host of knock off Asian import gear sets being pushed into the market place by vendors focused on getting the cheapest stuff they can. Well, like anything, you get what you pay for. I have been setting up Dana Gear Sets since the mid 1970's to date, and I have never had a setup problem with a genuine Dana-Spicer Gear Set. The same is not true for the aftermarket parts. Besides having sloppy machining, most aftermarket gears are not made to use the Dana factory set up tools, so a person usually has to apply some blood-boiling "Kentucky Windage" to the setup procedure to make progress!

Spindles and Spindle Nuts
General Motors use the same QU40293C front spindle on all 1977 to 1991 K30, K35, K3500, and V3500 one ton 4x4 trucks with the Model 60 open knuckle front drive axle. Spindle nuts are a different story. GM used a 6 slot spindle nut set with a thrust washer and bend over tab lockwasher from 1977 to 1981. For 1982 to 1991, a round 4 slot nut double nut design was used except on 1984 trucks with factory auto hubs which had a drag nut set that is no longer available. The good news is most of those unreliable auto hubs were junked years ago, so you can use the 3 piece round nut set with manual hubs.

Wheel Bearing and Seal Kits
General Motors used the same wheel bearing and seal numbers for the entire 1977 to 1991 production run of Dana 60 King Pin type front drive axles. However, spindle nut parts and lockout hub parts will vary by year, so order those components as needed from the sections above. We offer Wheel Bearing Part/Tool Kits with or without bearing and seal installation tools. If you need a spindle nut socket, see QT1025 for 1977 to 1981 trucks or QT1110 for 1982-1991 models.

(continued from above).....Chevy used the model number K30 to designate it's 1 ton 4x4 and the GMC version was K35. Later on, first GMC and later Chevy switched to K3500. When GM introduced the new K-series aerodynamic body style in 1988, the old square body style 1 ton 4x4 became a V3500 until the end of production in 1991. GM also used the Dana 60 front axle in 1984 to 1988 military CUCV models based on the civilian Blazer and GM pickup bodies. Mechanically, the front axles are almost identical to the civilian axles except there was no lockout hub option and military trucks could have a Trac-Lok limited slip front differential.
