Axle Universal Joints

International used both Small and Medium Axle Shaft Universal Joints on Dana 44 Open Knuckle Front Axles. For the 1973 to 1975 model year 1100 and 1200, both sizes of u-joints were offered depending upon the vehicle weight rating. 1973 Scouts had the Small U-joint, but 1974-1979 Scouts all have the medium size Axle U-Joint. Before ordering axle u-joints, verify the diameter of the axle universal joint cups!
1971-1972 1100, 1200: Axle U-Joint Cup Size is 1-1/16" (Small)
1973 to 1975 1100, 1200: Axle U-Joint Cup Size can be either 1-1/16" (Small) or 1-3/16" (Medium)
1973 Scout: Axle U-Joint Cup Size is 1-1/16" (Small)
1974-1979 Scout, Traveler: Axle U-Joint Cup Size is 1-3/16" (Medium)
For the early, small 1-1/16" u-joint we have only one non-greaseable choice as the small cross will lose too much strength if drilled for lube channels. We offer two different 1-3/16" Universal Joints. Both are good, reliable products, but different manufacturing techniques and seal types will have a major influence on the ultimate life of the joint under most conditions.

QU40792 IHC Dana 44 Small Front Axle Shaft U-Joint is a hot-forged, original equipment, non-greaseable, front axle shaft universal joint with 1-1/16" diameter cups. This is the strongest production u-joint we know of for this application.
QU40754 IHC Dana 44 Greaseable Medium Front Axle Shaft U-Joint is a heavy-duty, hot-forged, Greaseable 1-3/16" diameter cup, front axle shaft universal joint with metal backed seals for increased resistance to water contamination. This low-cost, but durable part is one of our most popular axle u-joints.

TK40712 Premium Torque King® Cold-Forged Non-Greaseable Medium Axle U-Joint for IHC Dana 44 Front Axles is a premium, quality factory lubed, 1-3/16" cup diameter universal joint for your heavy-duty 4x4. TK40712 is our best selling u-joint for this application because it combines the strength of a solid, cold-forged cross with excellent seals and a maintenance free, factory-lubed design that meets or exceeds all original equipment specifications.
     
Ball Joints
The 1971-1980 IHC Dana 44 Beam Type open knuckle front axle uses replaceable Ball Joints pressed into the steering knuckle. Both Ball Joints are weight bearing. A threaded adjuster that screws into the upper hole of the axle yoke is used to provide preload on the Ball Joints. Dana has modified the seal configuration on the current production parts, but the high quality and basic Ball Joint design has remained unchanged since the early 1970's. Over the years we have found the average Ball Joint life of our non-greaseable, factory Dana Ball Joints to be 7 to 10 years for vehicles used as daily drivers and/or work vehicles.

All bearings are not created equal for fit or durability, so we only stock first class, long lasting, Timken® Differential and Pinion Bearings for your Dana front axle. Timken® was and is a a major original equipment supplier of top-notch bearing components to Dana Spicer. Since I first started rebuilding Dana axles in the mid 1970's, I have found Timken® Bearings to be the most consistent in relation to the published dimensions of any bearing on the market which makes rebuilding an axle right the first time a WHOLE lot easier! Gaskets and Gasket Makers
In the mid 1970's Dana made a differential cover design change to heavy gauge covers with flat mating flanges. Unlike the previous, thin gauge covers with embossed flanges which were made for use with a cut gasket, the new design, thick gauge covers are designed for sealing with RTV. If you desire, you can still use a gasket with the new type cover by combining the gasket with thin films of RTV. We stock both Ultra Gray RTV Sealant and genuine Dana Gaskets.
