Jeep designated the full size Wagoneer, Cherokee, Cherokee Chief, Grand Wagoneer and pickups as J-Series vehicles. All 1974-1991 Jeep J-Series models have Dana 44 open knuckle front axles. The Wagoneer/Cherokee and 1/2 ton J-10 models have 6 bolt front wheel hubs. The 3/4 ton J-20 truck has 8 bolt front hubs. Drum brakes were standard and disc brakes optional for 1974-1976, but all 1977 to 1991 Jeeps will have front disc brakes. Except for a vacuum disconnect axle offered for the 1982-1984 model years, the front axle design was largely unchanged through the entire production period although spindles, axle shafts, inner axle seals, pinion yokes and hub parts will vary by year and model.

Axle Shaft Seals and Seal Kits for the Inner Axle Shafts
Except for the 1982-1984 vacuum disconnect CAD axles in which the left Seal is at the end of the left axle tube, all Jeep J-Series models have Inner Axle Shaft Oil Seals pressed in the inboard end of each axle tube, right next to the differential side bearings. These seals contact the inner axle shafts to prevent gear oil from running out of the differential and down the axle tubes. Old age, blown axle u-joints, and/or grit that works it's way into the axle tubes and cuts the seal are the usual causes of failure. A bad Inner Axle Shaft Seal can be detected by oil coming out the end of the axle tubes next to the axle shaft u-joint. Usually when these Seals start to fail, they will seep oil so the leakage may go undetected for quite some time. Many a ring and pinion set has been burned up from axles that lost all their lube when long term seepage was not noticed.

Several different Seals were used depending upon year and vehicle model. Except for QU40083 left CAD Axle Seal, axle disassembly including differential removal is required to replace the Seals.		 Link to Our Jeep Web Page Index
QU40055 1974-1977 Inner Axle Shaft Oil Seal with integral axle shaft guide for all 1974-1977 Jeep J-Series Dana 44 Front Drive Axles. One of these Seals are installed in each axle tube, right next to the differential to keep gear lube from leaking out the ends of the axle housing.
QU40159 Inner Axle Shaft Seal for 1978-up Jeep Cherokee Chief, J10, and J20 with the wide track, open knuckle, disc brake, Dana 44 front axles used on the pickup models and Cherokee Chiefs which can be identified by flared front fenders. Except for the 1982-1984 CAD axles, two of these seals are used, with one of Seal installed in each axle tube, right next to the differential to keep gear lube from leaking out the ends of the axle housing. For 1982-1984 axles with the vacuum controlled Central Axle Disconnect (CAD), QU40159 is the correct right axle Seal, order QU40083 for the left Seal.
QU40160 Inner Axle Shaft Seal for 1978 up Jeep Cherokee and Wagoneer with the narrow track, open knuckle, disc brake, Dana 44 front axles used on Wagoneers and standard Cherokees. Except for the 1982-1984 CAD axles, two of these seals are used, with one of Seal installed in each axle tube, right next to the differential to keep gear lube from leaking out the ends of the axle housing. For 1982-1984 axles with the vacuum controlled Central Axle Disconnect (CAD), QU40160 is the correct right axle Seal, order QU40083 for the left Seal.
QU40083 Left Inner Axle Shaft Seal for 1982 to 1984 Jeep Full Size Wagoneer, Cherokee, J10, J20 Dana 44 Front Axles with CAD fits the end of the left axle housing tube on 1982 to 1984 full size Jeep models with the vacuum controlled Central Axle Disconnect (CAD) system. Axle Universal Joints
We offer three different types of Universal Joints for your hard working 1974 to 1991 Jeep J-Series 4x4 with a Dana 44 solid front axle. All are good, reliable products, but different manufacturing techniques and seal types will have a major influence on the ultimate life of the joint. Our most popular choice is our TK40712 cold-forged, non-greaseable, original equipment replacement U-Joint. The wear-resistant cold-forged cross and superior sealing make it the best choice for both low maintenance and long life. QU40754 and QU90007 are hot-forged and are equipped with single lip seals. They are greaseable through a flush fitting threaded into one of the caps. With good maintenance and quality lubricant like our Pyroplex® Plus Grease, these joints will last and last. Ball Joints
The 1974-1991 Jeep Dana 44 Beam Type open knuckle front axle uses replaceable Ball Joints pressed into the steering knuckle. Both Ball Joints are weight bearing. A threaded adjuster that screws into the upper hole of the axle yoke is used to provide preload on the Ball Joints. Dana has modified the seal configuration on the current production parts, but the high quality and basic Ball Joint design has remained unchanged since the early 1970's. Over the years we have found the average Ball Joint life of our non-greaseable, factory Dana Ball Joints to be 7 to 10 years for vehicles used as daily drivers and/or work vehicles. Differential Bearing and Seal Kits
All 1974-1983 Jeep Wagoneer/Cherokee, 1984-1991 Grand Wagoneer, and 1974-88 J-10/J-20 used open knuckle Dana 44 Front Axles. Many of these vehicles have full time transfer cases so bearing wear issues on front axles can be expected on higher mileage trucks. With a full time transfer case, both axles are always powered during operation. If your vintage Jeep has over 150,000 miles on it, there is a good chance that significant bearing wear may have occurred on your differential and pinion bearings. When you replace the bearings, do not forget to replace the inner axle shaft oil seals.

Differential Parts
All 1974-1991 Jeep Dana 44 Front Axles were factory equipped with conventional open differentials. Depending upon the year, model and transmission, both full time and part time transfer cases were used to drive the front axle. In vehicles having full time transfer cases in which the front axle is always under power when driving, wear on the thrust washers and cross shaft can be expected on higher mileage vehicles. The differential small parts are the same for all ratios, but the ring gear flange on the case castings are different for 3.73 and numerically lower ratios and axles having 4.09 and numerically higher ratios due to the pinion gear diameter size for high and low ratios. Gaskets and Gasket Makers
In the mid 1970's Dana made a differential cover design change to heavy gauge covers with flat mating flanges. Unlike the previous, thin gauge covers with embossed flanges which were made for use with a cut gasket, the new design, thick gauge covers are designed for sealing with RTV. If you desire, you can still use a gasket with the new type cover by combining the gasket with thin films of RTV. We stock both Ultra Gray RTV Sealant and genuine Dana Gaskets.
