Parts for Dana-Spicer Closed Knuckle Model 44 Solid Beam Front Axles in 1957-1973 Jeep 4x4 Trucks

Page Under Construction, More Parts to be Added Soon!

Jeep first used the Dana 44 Closed Knuckle Beam Type Front Axle in the 1957 cab over engine Forward Control (FC) series of 4x4 trucks. The Dana 44 will be found in FC150 trucks with the 57" wide track option which was basically a 1/2 ton short bed truck. Also using the Dana 44 axle was the long wheel base FC-170 3/4 ton to 1 ton truck which was available with either single or dual rear wheels. Jeep built FC series trucks through the 1965 model year. The 1963-1973 Jeep Gladiator line of trucks would also use the Solid Beam Dana 44 closed knuckle axle as the stock axle. A Dana 44IFS axle was available as on option for 1963 to 1965 model years. The Gladiator line was built in 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton single rear wheel versions, plus a dual rear wheel 1 ton truck.

Closed Knuckle Parts
We stock the regular service closed knuckle parts for your 1957-1973 Jeep 4x4 truck with a closed knuckle Dana 44 front axle which will have 8 bolt Knuckle Ball Hemisphere Seals. With a Closed Knuckle axle, the axle universal joints and king pin bearings are lubricated by very heavy oil or a viscous grease that will flow when the axle shafts rotate. A large, multi-piece seal is bolted to the backside of the steering knuckle to keep lubricant in and water out. On poorly maintained closed knuckle axles or axles equipped with lockout hubs that are rarely used in 4x4, the upper king pin bearing and axle universal joint can suffer from lack of lubrication. The Ball Seals will usually weep some lubricant especially when standard gear oils are used as a lubricant. Submersion of the axle under water or condensation from temperature changes can cause moisture to build up inside the enclosed ball and lead to corrosion damage and part failures. Differential and Pinion Bearings (Individual)
There was a Jeep Dana 44 differential Side Bearing change which occurred during the 1967 to 1968 model years, The Jeep Parts Books show the changeover by by referencing it to Jeep axle assembly part numbers instead of by year. The very early production trucks with 258-6 and 358-V8 engines will have the earlier, small ID bearing. From what I can remember from working on them, almost all the mid-1967 and newer trucks had the new bearing with the exception of some heavy GVW models that did not change until late 1967 or early 1968. If you have a 1967 or 1968 model year Gladiator truck, you should verify what diff side bearing you have before ordering!
All bearings are not created equal for fit or durability, so we only stock first class, long lasting, Timken® Differential and Pinion Bearings for your Dana front axle. Timken® was and is a a major original equipment supplier of top-notch bearing components to Dana Spicer. Since I first started rebuilding Dana axles in the mid 1970's, I have found Timken® Bearings to be the most consistent in relation to the published dimensions of any bearing on the market which makes rebuilding an axle right the first time a WHOLE lot easier!
